Getting Ready for Emergency Part 4 - Make Candles in a Jar
Candles are expensive! When lights go out during a summer or winter storm you will probably reach for a flashlight, after you find batteries. If lights are out for any extended time your batteries will eventually burn out. Why not make your own candles, that's what they did in the old days. This 8 oz size jar is what I used to make a candle in a jar with a lid. On Utube I found a recipe for making candles and here are the Ingredients: Crisco (vegetable shortening large 32 oz.), canning jar, and small candle used for wick. I used the Pami Traditional Shabbat Candle Sticks 72 count on Amazon. Trim bottom of candle about 1/2" or more so it will fit in jar with lid closed. First, Put solid vegetable shortening in glass jar about 2" from the top and melt in microwave with no lid for 1 minute. Don't put too much shortening in jar because the small candle has to go in the center. Take out of microwave and most of the shortening should be melted. Let cool about 15 minutes and put trimmed small candle in middle standing straight up with wick up. Put in freezer about 30 minutes or until hard. (Option 2- You can put in freezer first for about 5 min. then put small candle in center and it may stand up better and then refreeze. However don't freeze shortening to long before putting the candle in). After coming out of freezer let it sit at room temperature for a while before putting metal top on. Your candle in a jar is now ready for use or storage by replacing the metal lid. Candle should burn around 4 hrs. or more and is easy to carry. You can make lots of these candles using canning jars and the 72 count Shabbat Candle Sticks. What do you think?
