Very large, very useful bail-lid jar

CAVEAT: Bail-lid jars, which is what this Glolaurge jar is, were used for home canning in the first half of the 20th century. They're not used for that anymore, because there are better, safer ways to bottle juices, jams, and sauces for room-temperature (shelf-stable) storage.Bail-lid jars are now used almost exclusively for dry storage or decoration. They're a great choice for storing pasta, flour, or other dry goods, especially in households where plastic storage is being phased out in favor of glass.With that out of the way, this 1.98-gallon Glolaurge jar is a *huge* bail-lid jar. The opening is wide enough that it's really convenient for scooping, even compared to regular wide-mouth Mason jars. The lid seals firmly, and the glass is crystal clear, not at all cloudy. Per the photo it towers over a one-gallon milk jug.You'll want to take great care when washing this, though. The glass is good, but it's big enough that temperature differentials can crack it. The instructions make it clear that you shouldn't put boiling liquids in it, nor should you keep it in the freezer. If you run it through the dishwasher, you should let it cool to room temperature before putting anything inside it.I can't speak to whether or not this jar will work for fermentation, like saurkraut or kombucha, but assuming a bail-lid will work for that, this will do fine. Just take care when washing it that you don't get it too hot too quickly.

Massive Jar

I made the mistake of underestimating the size of a two-gallon jar. Two gallons is massive, and you should keep its size in mind too. The jar itself is, of course, great. Great in size, great in being really airtight, and great in having a lot of volume, especially if you're into fermenting large quantities of vegetables or need to store a large amount of something.The opening is about medium to large size, which makes it a little easier to clean since you can easily get your arm in there. It is a little weighty for a glass jar too. The lid is super airtight and possibly might be difficult to open or close if you're on the frail end, as the metal latch seems short—I suggest maybe trying to hold down the lid when pulling or pressing down the latch. At $33, good value, especially considering the massive size of the thing. There are plenty of uses for a glass jar of this size in the kitchen.
