Purchased for sourdough proofing, works great on larger bowls.
I’ve been baking sourdough for a few years and wanted something reusable that sits between plastic wrap and a damp towel for proofing. This beeswax bowl cover isn’t a gimmick, but it’s also not magic — it just solves a very specific problem. The beeswax coating creates a breathable barrier that helps slow moisture loss without completely sealing the bowl. In practice, that means the dough surface stays soft without getting wet or forming condensation. I’ve found it especially useful for longer or overnight proofs where plastic wrap can trap too much moisture and towels tend to dry out.The elastic edge fits snugly over my mixing bowls and stays put. It’s easy to rinse with cold water and mild soap, and it’s nice not going through rolls of plastic wrap every week. The design is also a bonus — it looks better than plastic wrap sitting on the counter.Comparison Based on My ExperiencePlastic WrapPros: Airtight, cheap, widely availableCons: Traps condensation, creates waste, can leave the dough surface wet or stickyDamp TowelPros: Breathable, simple, no plasticCons: Dries out over time, inconsistent humidity, can absorb odorsBeeswax Bowl CoverPros: Reusable, breathable, maintains more stable humidity, no condensation buildupCons: Not essential, costs more upfront, needs gentle cleaning (no heat)Bottom LineIf you bake often and do longer fermentation, this is a nice quality-of-life upgrade. It won’t improve your dough technique, but it does create a more consistent proofing environment and reduces plastic waste. Not a must-have, but definitely useful if you bake regularly.
These are really nice waxed covers that will work perfectly on my round bannetons. They are made well, with good, tight stitching around the edges and seem to be cotton, though I can't tell by feel because they are waxed and not cloth-feeling.They do have some stretch, though while new and for a while until they break in, they are stiff and have fold creases from being packed for shipping. All of this is normal, so no stars off for any of it.They have a pretty graphic on them of baked bread so they will be perfect for covering my sourdough for proofing. They are also useful for storage if the bread is kept in a non-porous bowl. The cover has just enough porosity to keep the crust crusty while also maintaining enough moisture to keep the bread soft. It's a happy medium not always met by every storage option. As an aside, they will also work well for wrapping cheese because they work the same for it: enough air to keep the cheese from being wet, causing it to mold prematurely, while protecting it enough so it doesn't dry out.Overall, these are very pretty, nicely made, and will be a lovely addition to my sourdough supplies. I also like that the company has verbiage on the packaging explaining care and how to extend the life of them, and also letting you know that because they are a natural product, they will not last forever. As nice as they are, with care, they will last a long time. Also, if you are the DIY type, you can get your own wax supplies and rewax them when they do eventually wear out. I'm that type and these are nice enough that I would invest the resources to rewax them.
At the time of this review, this 2 pack of 10 inch beeswax bowl covers is listed for $16.99.My wife and I tried finding something similar locally at a specialty kitchen store and had no luck, so when these popped up, I decided to give them a try. I am glad I did.My wife has been making sourdough since well before the pandemic. She usually makes round loaves, but lately she has been experimenting more with traditional loaf pans for sandwich bread. The problem was finding a simple way to cover the loaf pan while the dough is proofing. These covers fit a standard loaf pan perfectly, as you can see in my photos.Out of the package they are a little stiff, but once you handle them and warm them up, they become more flexible and easier to use.Overall, this is much easier than dealing with plastic wrap, and I like that it allows a little breathability. My wife is happy with them, and they work exactly as intended.
These are nice, thick covers that work great on the round bannetons I have as well as most of my medium to large bowls. They are well made and seem like they will be quite durable. Because of the beeswax and thickness of the cloth, they are very stiff and creased out of the package but loosen up with use. These are a fantastic upgrade from my shower cap covers and are much more nonstick. The beeswax does an excellent job of keeping moisture in while still allowing airflow. I haven't had them long enough to speak to longevity but I'm hopeful they are going to last a long time based on my experience so far.
I had been using plastic shower caps for the covering my sourdough bowls during proofing. I recently switched to beeswax lined bread bags for bread storage and it's helped my bread last a few days longer. So, I thought I would make the change with my proofing covers also. Plus I just like the idea of my bread being covered by beeswax instead of plastic. These are combination of cotton and beeswax and I've notice that when my dough continues to rise during cold proof it doesn't stick to the cover. I don't have to flour the inside of the cover like I did with the plastic shower cap.I have used these over my round banneton's, my glass bowl and my tall plastic storage container that I use sometimes during my bulk rise. They have fit seamlessly on all of these containers.
