The Acacia wood set is attractive and sturdy. They assist in every day cooking and clean up has been a breeze so far. I did soap rinse utensils then sprayed food grade mineral oil on them before using to extend their life. We found them easy to use for stirring in bowls etc. It's a basic set for everyday use in the kitchen. They are lightweight yet sturdy enough they won't snap from mixing thick stews, chili etc. Our only wish was that they were wider. The spoon rest is a great idea to prevent messes on your counter.
My wife has been going through a purge of old plastic and rubber utensils in the kitchen, so I ordered this set to help her. Apparently she’s read enough articles that they can release microplastics and other additives when heated. And if they’re old enough, they may contain BPA and BPS so it’s time to go. We’re mostly switching over to stainless steel and wood but in some cases, food grade silicone is needed. This set is all acacia wood which is my favorite for both look and density. There’s 5 items here, 4 of which are known as spurtles which aren’t as common in the US but I love them. They’re long and slender but without a spoon bowl at the end, so they’re ideal for stirring and cooking but not so much for scooping any liquids. We have a ton of wood spoons but due to the long skinny handle they don’t stir as well as these, especially large soups or mashed potatoes for example. So I like the variety of lengths included here, and one even is slotted. Plus there’s a spoon rest included which can double as a large scoop. So much to work with here and I like the quality of the wood. The goal is to keep them clean, never leave them soaking in the dirty sink, always hand wash and air dry, and remember to apply mineral oil about once monthly. Not a whole lot of maintenance, just care for them and I expect them to last. Please note: My review is part of Amazon's Vine Program which provides products at a reduced cost in exchange for honest, accurate reviews. This is an okay set of acacia wood utensils. With 5 pieces for around $20 it is pretty inexpensive, though acacia wood items are generally pretty cheap so these aren't exactly a must buy bargain.Like any new purchase that is going to be used for food, I immediately washed them, by hand because they are wood, and wood items shouldn't go in the dishwasher.Despite Acacia wood having some natural water resistance, the grain raised significantly as soon as these got wet, making them feel rough and shaggy, and changing the look of them. There was no way I was going to use them like that.I let them dry completely, then sanded each piece well with fine-grit sandpaper, then oiled them heavily with food-safe mineral oil and let them sit for 24 hours. You can see in my photos the before and after and how much nicer they look after being oiled.I haven't used these much so far, as I haven't found a kitchen job that they are better suited than some other tool I already have, so I don't find myself reaching for them often. They are a bit too thick to make decent cooking spatulas, they don't really get under things very well, not to mention they are quite narrow. The tips are rounded too much to be decent scrapers or saute tools. They are okay for spreading and scraping, but lack the flexibility of a rubber or silicone spatula or jar cleaning tool.I know a spurtle is recommended to have for sourdough making, which is the main reason I picked these up, so maybe they will prove their worth as I get further along that journey. But so far I'm more likely to reach for my epicurean "cool tool" or a small wooden spoon when dividing and feeding my starter, and a dough whisk when mixing ingredients, and just haven't found these to be that useful. But, if you don't already have any similar, better, or more versatile tools, these are decent for spreading, scraping jars, etc, and you do get 4 tools and a rest for a similar price to a single higher quality tool. Personally, I find the higher quality tools worth it with how much more useful they are, and for the fact that while my wood ones will require maintenance over time, they didn't require it right out of the box like this set did.
I just really fell in love with these. They are well made, lovely to look at and satiny smooth in the hand. As beautiful as they came and as much as I wanted to use them right away, I thought they could be even better and I wanted to protect them to get the best life I can from them, so I gave them a coat of food grade mineral oil. You can see the difference in the two photos below. They're lightweight but not flimsy. I see many reviewers had trouble with rough utensils that needed oiling. Mine came quite smooth and I'd prefer to oil the unfinished wood myself so I know what's been on/in it. So YMMV. After use, I also prefer to clean my wood utensils with a light hand wash and towel dry, then finish air drying, with another oil treatment if it looks like it needs it. Even my old three-to-a-bag dollar store wood utensils seem to like this treatment, though my husband insists on putting them in the dishwasher if they're laying about when he's washing up.As tools, these are quite functional and I've used them a fair amount mixing for baking, sauteeing, etc., though not so much for things that will certainly stain them, such as black beans. The one piece that I'm not sure is so well thought out is the spoon rest. It's difficult to keep it looking nice when it's constantly covered with wet foods, often acidic, and often very colorful.I think these are probably a bit expensive--they come out to $4.00 for each piece. You can probably find the same quality for a bit less. But it's not so much when you factor in the shipping.
