It’s so cool. Nice added assessors to my breville. Like the quality and how it really tamps my coffee for espresso.
This tamper works exactly how it should. The spring-loaded design gives the same pressure every time, and the auto-leveling makes tamping quick and straightforward. It feels solid and has noticeably improved the consistency of my shots.
I bought both this along with the look-alike Pusee tamper. They appear in most ways to be virtually identical (and probably made in the same Chinese factory). Dimensionally, including the good depth to which the tamper will extend (~12.5mm) and the printed scale on the shaft, they are identical. And both have two springs, although the upper springs are mounted slightly differently. Therein, apparently, lies the difference in how they work. The heavier (30 lb?) spring only activates after the lighter spring pushes the base of the tamper as far as it will go; then the expected “calibrated” weight kicks in. But I could not get the Cubaro’s heavier spring to activate, so the tamps were pretty light. Perhaps it might activate of the bottom disc was more limited in its ~12.5mm travel, but despite the etched scale on the shaft, that distance is not adjustable. One other small thing is the white etched Cubaro name on the top of the black base; the Pusee, absent ots name or logo there, is cleaner-looking. Other than that, the weight and appearance of the tamper are quite nice and I would probably have been fine with it if I did not have the Pusee for comparison.
The tamper that came with my espresso machine felt very light and was slightly smaller than my portafilter which was messy to use. This tamper addressed my issue. It's a quality tamper that is well built. It has a beautiful wood handle. It's easy to use as it sits on top of my portafilter and tamps within in it when pressed down which functions as a leveler giving it a nice even tamp. The spring loaded functionality gives a consistent 30lbs when pressed. The spiral design on the bottom surface always gives it a beautiful finish when pressed.
I really like this tamper!!!!!!! We tried the factory tamper and it just hurt your palm because it was so small. We like this tamper because the handle to a really good size and doesn't hurt. The tamper is spring loaded which is nice when you want to tamp a partially full filter and then add more grounds. The circle pattern on the bottom even spreads the grounds if you twist it. I like that the tamper also make a level and even puck across the filter. I am very happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone looking for an upgrade on the factory ones.
First off, I want to say that this tamper is well designed and very well made. The weight is substantial, and the tamper is a joy to use. The handle looks great and is very comfortable to use when groggy in the morning. The sizing is great for all of my 54mm portafilters. There are two issues that prevent me from giving this a hearty recommend. First, it's a bit of a pain to clean. When you use the tamper correctly, some grounds inevitably get stuck between the tamp and the leveling shield. Since the leveling shield is on a separate, lighter spring it's not impossible to clean (like some other designs), but it adds some more complexity to your routine. For me, this means using fine motor skills at a time of day when I'd rather not have to fiddle around with things.Secondly, and the deal-breaker for me, would be the allowable travel distance of the actual tamper. I have a portafilter that advertises a 18-21g capacity basket. However the travel on the tamper is not deep enough to fully tamp at even 20 grams of fresh beans. At my preferred 18g dose, I can't even see the concentric circles and am forced to use the terrible stock Breville tamper I have.A bonus gripe is that you can't use this tamper through a dosing funnel. I've found that tamping before I take off the my dosing funnel significantly improves cleanup. If the tamper had a much larger travel, I would be able to tamp any dose size and even potentially tamp through a funnel.Even though the tamper is quite well made, I cannot recommend it. It's sort of fun to try with the leveling feature but in reality, the tolerances are not good enough to be notably better than doing it manually after a couple dozen repetitions. The value proposition for this is poor even though it's well made and no doubt looks great.
This piece looks very well made and the quality of the wood and metal feels solid. The spring and pressure gauge seem fine, though to me the numbers feel like they should read the other way around.Unfortunately, it was just a little too big for my maker. This one is 53.3 mm and mine is closer to 51 mm, so it did not fit. The quality is good enough that I wish it had worked, but sizing matters here.
