Nice tamper that's easy to use
This is a spring loaded tamper that works perfectly with my Breville 54 mm portafilter. With a standard taper, you have to somewhat guess how much pressure you're putting on the grinds and I found that when I first got my espresso machine I would sometimes try to press too hard and would end up applying uneven force to the puck (which can damage the puck and allow the water to form channels through the grinds). A couple years ago I switched to a tamper/distributor which works very well once you zero in on the perfect amount of beans and fineness of grind for the particular beans that you are using. I decided to give this tamper a try and was very impressed. It came with the 30 pound spring installed and I decided to switch it out to 25 pounds (keep in mind that when you brew espresso at 9 bar, that is equal to 130 pounds per square inch, so you are never going to be able to tamp as firmly as the water is being injected - the key is being smooth and applying even force). The main spring is easily changed by twisting the handle counterclockwise while holding the base/piston, and then you can replace the spring which sits up inside the handle. Unfortunately, the first time I unscrewed the handle, everything came apart, including the smaller spring that connects the base to the part that sits just on top of the portafilter. There are only a few parts but an instruction sheet would've been nice at this point. The top of the handle is much larger than the basic tamper that came with the machine and it feels quite comfortable in my hand; I feel like I can apply much more even force with this tamper than with the original. I was initially worried that the ridges in the base would collect grinds, but that is not the case. And my espresso comes out perfect with great crema! This tamper feels and looks good. It functions very well, feels solid and it has an overall good feel in the hand. It is a definite upgrade to the basic tamper that came with the machine and is a good value. Definitely recommend.

A great way to level up your espresso
I have recently been getting more into espresso and wanted to level up from the basic tamper my machine came with. I wanted something that had variable pressure settings at a reasonable cost and landed here. I've been really happy with this so far. It has a solid weight to it and at the 30lb pressure, requires a fair bit of force to push down (certainly more than I was applying before!). I'm able to get a consistent tamp of my espresso and my shots have been more regular so I'm having with how it's performing. I find it easy to use, though my wife has a harder time pushing it down than I do. The weight also makes it feel durable so I'm confident it will last for a long time.

Must Have for the Coffee Nook!
Works well with my old faithful Breville machine. Easy to use and provides the perfect tamp. Upgraded replacement of my old tamper. Great value for the cost. I've recommended this tamper to my friends as they build their own coffee nooks.

Good for getting a consistent tamp on the portafilter
I have been making expresso drinks for quite a while, with several machines, the latest of which is the Breville BES870XL. It took a while but after a few less than optimal cups, I was able to dial in some really good pulls. Between my wife and I, we do 6 cups a day, so I have quite a bit of experience using this machine. I typically use the double wall, single cup insert on the portafilter and the provided basic tamp tool. Often, I would realize that I might press harder than my wife does when she makes our cups. That leads to inconsistent pulls depending on who is making the coffee.I ordered this tamper as a friend had found and was successfully using something similar, if not the same one. The tamp comes with 3 different springs of varying strength so you can choose how hard to compact the grinds. The tool itself appears well made and has a good hand feel. We are using the spring that was shipped and haven't yet tried the higher pressure ones, that may come later if we need to get the pressure up a bit more for better extraction. We have used it for several days now and about 10-15 cups. It has been fairly consistent across both of us using it. Right now it is clocking in at the lower end of the optimal extraction range, we typically shoot for about 12 o'clock on the pressure dial and this has consistently given us between 10 and 11 o'clock, but it has been consistent. On our machine anything under 11:00 usually results in a weaker pull, but drinkable as it is in the acceptable extraction range. As I said, I will likely move to the next spring and see how it goes.

Consistent tamping. Easy to use. Easy to clean.
I've been wanting to upgrade to a spring loaded tamper for more consistent tamping. This solves my problem. It is a quality tamper that has a little weight to it. The size fits my Breville portafilter perfectly. It comes with multiple springs to allow for adjusting to different loads. It works well and is easy to use. I usually give it a quick brush after each use which makes it easy to clean.

Exceptional Espresso Tamper — Beautiful, Precise, and Built to be Timeless
I love this thing. It’s absolutely worth it, especially considering many competitors cost much more for a similar design.I’m a self-proclaimed coffee snob — I roast my own beans, hand-grind every morning, and weigh my coffee down to the tenth of a gram. One of the most variable steps in espresso prep is the tamp, and this little doohickey takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.It just feels quality. Hefty at around 400g, solid machined aluminum and stainless steel, with three interchangeable springs for adjustable tamping pressure. It fits my Breville 54mm portafilter basket perfectly, and I love the black finish. As a bonus, it even comes with a silicone tray so you can display this mini work of art when not in use.My only complaint is the lack of documentation. I had to fumble through figuring out how to swap the spring — there are actually two inside (one for the force, one for return tension), and the reassembly wasn’t intuitive at first. Once you understand it, though, it’s simple and makes sense.Overall, I love it. It’s fun to hold, satisfying to use, and looks fantastic on the counter. 5/5 — I’m already planning to buy a few as gifts for my fellow coffee nerds.
