When I was looking to purchase this item I read reviews that complained about how the head with all the pins didn’t snap into the base or sit nicely on it. I purchased this anyway because it had both the distribution tool and the screen at a good price. The reviews were right — the head doesn’t sit nicely on the base. I don’t think it was designed to though. Since there are magnets on the head I end up just storing it on my espresso machine. The base is another tool that sits nearby doing nothing — except when you want to clean the pins/needles. Those get coffee grounds built up on them. Instead of taking the needles out and cleaning them one by one you can just run the needles around the base’s interior which works with friction. There is no bottom wall on the base so the grinds just conveniently fall out instead of building up all over again. Basically the base is a cleaning tool for the head and it does a very good job and the whole thing is pretty well designed.

Mediocre quality at best
Why did you pick this product vs others?:After over 20 years with my old 58mm E61 espresso machine I upgraded to a new model that uses 53mm portafilter and accessories so I have been replacing all my old gear with new stuff. I picked up this set primarily for the funnel and I must say I am quite disappointed. It's very lightweight aluminum compared to others that are steel. It has what appears to magnets that don't stick to any ferrous metal. It's quite a bit smaller than the listed 54mm - it fits inside my 53mm portafilter easily with lots of wiggle room, meaning it's actually quite a bit smaller than I would like. A good funnel sits on top of the portafilter to allow for even ground distribution - this one does not allow grounds to reach all the way to the edges of the portafilter. The other items are similar - mediocre quality. The screen is pretty nice. Great starter set!
In our family, we are coffee fanatics, and oh boy do we love our espresso! So I was really excited to try this set!My favorite part of this lovely espresso set is the needle distributor tool. It is so sturdy, and has a satisfying heft to it, it just feels so good in your hand - the finish is so lovely and smooth!I've never had a needle tool that is fully customizable - you can choose how many needles you want to use and their distribution, and we found that to be really helpful - we reconfigured the needles for different beans / grinds, and it really helped to separate and distribute the grinds evenly.Which makes it especially helpful that extra needles are included in the kit - when you can remove them and change them around, you can also lose or bend them, so even though that hasn't happened yet, we're so happy about the thoughtful touch of including extra needles in the kit.The screen is thick and sturdy, and the filters are well made - both fit our portafilter perfectly. They work perfectly fine, though I have to admit I've never used either in making espresso before and to me, they just seem like an extra, unnecessary step - we didn't notice any difference in the quality and flavor of the espresso using the filters, and one of the things I love best about espresso is that it's so simple - you don't need a filter like regular coffee.Though maybe we just don't have the refined taste that other people do - maybe others would notice difference?Overall, it is really a lovely starter set and totally giftable for the espresso/coffee fanatic in your life! A great value for the money - highly recommend!
