Running the coffee bar at Persnickety Books means managing multiple baristas with different experience levels. One of the biggest variables in pulling a good shot is tamping pressure. I picked up this 58mm spring-loaded tamper to help standardize that process on our Rancilio Epoca.Performance & ConsistencyFunctionally, this tool is excellent. My baristas appreciate the upgrade from the standard solid tamper, as it feels more ergonomic and reliable.The Packaging FailThe reason I’m docking a star is the presentation and assembly. The tamper arrived partially disassembled, with pieces just floating around loose in the box.There were no instructions included. As someone who enjoys mechanics, it was fairly intuitive for me to figure out how to screw it all together, but shipping loose, heavy stainless steel parts without padding is a recipe for damaged threads or dinged finishes. Superb, heavy, precise

Pros: Stunning finish, deceptively heavy, comfortably ergonomic, extremely well made with smoothness throughout and no manufacturing flaws or poor fit anywhere, not even a little. Good price. Very enjoyable unboxing experience from its overly-protected foam capsule. "Craters of the moon" nicely etched on lip.Cons: Convex base will not sit flat, of course. Wish a little tray were included to accommodate it.You're probably reading this because like me, you tend to collect espresso tampers for fun. I didn't need this piece but I was immediately drawn to it. After a couple of months in my cart I finally bought it more-so just to have it and I am very happy I did. Zero buyer's remorse with it.It is deceptively heavy for its size (2lbs) and while it's listed as steel, it feels more like depleted uranium. Fits all my bigger 58mm baskets from Sworks and Pesado with extremely close precision leaving no untampered ridge anywhere. It had a cool name "Craters of the moon" which is a first for a tamper. Friends immediately noticed it too. I cut up a piece of the foam packaging to create a soft, concave base to stand it upright.
