This cookie cutter was solid, well made and worked extremely well to make cut out sugar cookies. It is definitely NOT one of those flimsy cookie cutters that lead to the little bits falling off. My pig cookies were adorable with tails, legs and ears intact!
I mainly ordered this to make "Puerquitos" (Marranitos / Mexican Pig-Shaped Cookies), a childhood favorite of mine. They are definitely smaller than what they typically bake at the Panaderia. I will be honest I didn't even realize how small it was, a little disappointed when I received it because of that one flaw. Granted, It is in the title! A mistake on my part, I was just excited to find a pig cookie cutter that was shaped to what I grew up with.It has worked perfectly, I actually prefer the small size now! I was never able to really finish the large ones and typically ate half of it. Since they are smaller, I am able to finish a whole one and it be fresh tasting every time. They can dry out if you don't finish it trying to save it for the next day or so. Perfect size for kids as well!I've tried different recipes to recreate the taste I grew up with. I was smacked with nostalgic when I finally found the right one! If you are searching for those Marranitos here is the recipe for you!Ingredients (18 large cookies or 30-36 small 3.75 inch cookies)1¼ c. packed grated piloncillo (or dark brown sugar)¼ c. butter or shortening, at room temp.1 large egg, at room temp.⅓ c. milk1½ tsp. vanilla bean paste or extract1½ tsp. baking soda1½ tsp. ground cinnamon1 tsp. ground ginger¾ c. molasses¼ c. honey~6 c. all-purpose flour (or more depending on how wet your dough is)to finish:1 large egg, beatenInstructionsBeat piloncillo and butter together in a large bowl until combined (they won't really cream together, just beat as best as you can). Add the egg, milk, and vanilla bean paste and beat again until smooth. Add baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, molasses, and honey. Beat until well combined.Beat in 4 cups of the flour. Gradually add the last 2 cups of flour, switching from mixer to a wooden spoon once the dough starts to become too stiff (so that you don't burn out your mixer). The dough will seem a bit crumbly, but once you've stirred in as much of the flour as you can, use your hands to quickly knead in the rest of the flour. You're looking for a dough that you're able to roll out.Lay a sheet of plastic wrap on the counter and turn the dough out onto it. Pull dough together into a large disc and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.Preheat the oven to 350° F and line a couple of sheet trays with parchment paper or a silpat.Cut dough in half and wrap one half back in plastic wrap; set aside (or refrigerate for now). Roll other half of dough out on a lightly floured surface to about ¼" thickness. Use a large pig-shaped cookie cutter (dip in a bit of flour) to cut out pig-shaped cookies. Place on prepared baking sheet. Re-roll dough and repeat. Repeat with other half of dough when ready.Brush a thin coat of the beaten egg over the dough before you put it into the oven.Slide into preheated oven and bake for ~15 minutes or until cookies just start to turn golden around the edges and are just cooked through.Puerquitos are a dense, almost dry type of cookies that are very filling and surprisingly not very sweet. Perfect for making my Mexican pig cookies, Marranitos!
Like many customers I purchased this to make the traditional Mexican piggy cookies and it works very well for those. It cuts cleanly and appears to be very sturdy. It is on the smaller size, but my family and I prefer that for this type of treat.One thing I would like to mention though, is that this comes with no additional packaging. I ordered this along with some other heavier items, when I opened the box the poor cookie cutter was almost flat against the side of the package. It wasn't too difficult to bend back into shape so I didn't bother with a return. Regardless, it would've be nice if Amazon had at least put some bubble wrap around it.
Really cute cookie cutter. My only disappointment is that one of the reasons I bought this item is that it was made in the USA. I wish it was embossed on the item and not just on a sticker. I pride myself in buying USA products and I encourage Amazon to carry more items for me to purchase. The quality is EXCELLANT!
Easy to use for cut-out cookies. Has nice folded edge at top of cookie cutter. Hand wash only. Would definitely buy this brand again. Made in the USA.
