This tamper is good enough for the task, is heavy as it should be. I've been using it for about 8 years now and still looks as good as new
It is amazing how balanced this very heavy tamper lies in my hand. It feels like a million bucks, lol.... perfectly smooth and heavy as it should be. And it makes a big difference to the brewing of an espresso. I have a plastic tamper, which is attached at the side of my espresso machine, and this device is really useless. It won't do a good job at pressing and packing the coffee in the receptacle. My espresso machine is the DeLonghi EC 155, which is a nice machine, apart from the not-so-fancy plastic tamper. This stainless tamper makes a big difference: The coffee is compacted well and smoothed on the surface. The brewing takes place more evenly, when I brew a double batch. Before, without it, the two outlet holes would dispense unevenly, one always being full throttle and the other dripping away, and sometimes the left, or the right, depending on how the grounds were compacted. With this tamper, you can press them evenly, so no more dripping on one side and flushing on the other. And there is a perk: if you have two espresso sizes (one cup/ two cups), you could buy a smaller tamper base and screw that on for the one cup size, too, because the base can be unscrewed. If you have the DeLonghi, you need this 51 mm size for the two cup measure. I highly recommend this tamper, at a price that simply cannot be beaten!
The Vktech Stainless Steel Coffee Tamper is a well made product. It fits the hand nicely, has a nice heft (it is solid metal), and it is polished to a nice luster. It is a very well designed and attractive tamper.I kept putting off buying a metal coffee tamper rationalizing that it was money I did not need to spend. I was making do with the plastic tamper that came with my Expresso machine or using the bottom of a round spice jar that sort of fit the grounds basket. I finally took the plunge and purchased this tamper and am very pleased with its performance. I am not sure if the coffee tastes any better but it is sure a lot easier to tamp the grounds not to mention that it looks kind of neat just sitting there on the counter with the Expresso machine that is also polished stainless steel. With respect to the 51mm diameter of this tamper, it fits my grounds basket perfectly but machines vary in grounds basket diameter so I would recommend if you are considering purchasing a tamper, to first measure the internal diameter of your grounds basket and purchasing a tamper that is slightly smaller (say around 0.5 mm). These are not adjustable so if you purchase one that is too large, it simply will not work and if you purchase one that is too small, the grounds will push out around the edges when you try to tamp them. Bottom line, purchase the size you need to fit your grounds basket.Overall, I give this product five stars. On one level, it seems a little pricy but the manufacturer hit a homerun with this design.
I'm not sure what "Unibody solid stainless steel construction", as advertised, is supposed to mean, but I don't believe the entire item is made of steel. One thing that is not mentioned in any of the top reviews that I read was that the tamper is actually two parts; a head and a handle and they screw into each other. The inside of the female screw port shows, to my eye, that there is a different sort of metal at the core of the product; you can even see a flake of the metal resting on the bottom of the port in my photo. Most likely it is a cheaper and softer metal used to add weight. I don't entirely know what is on the outside of the product, but I guess that it is stainless steel.Nonetheless, the item has a nice hefty weight to it and even from looking inside the female screw port you can see a certain level of thickness that the outside steel retains; about a 1/4" would be my guestimate. I'm not sure if that is how thick the steel is over the entire product, and not just how it is at that part of the product, but so far I have not encountered any problems with it.I was willing to pay the higher price ($10 more) for this product as opposed to one of the other stamps out there because I had read that the others had a thin coat of steel on the outside and the soft metal core could be exposed with a few mere nicks of the surface steel. I don't want to ingest metal flakes of any sort, so I thought it would be worth it to pay triple the price for a long-lasting quality item. I think that is what I have here, but I still need to confirm over time.NOTE: at first I thought the reddish flaky metal pieces might have been rust, but it wouldn't make sense since I bought the product factory new and it is non-rusting stainless steel.
It is way better than even what I thought I was getting. I love how it feels. It is not light, but heavy in a good way. I like the weight if it because it helps to get a good tamp with the extra weight. I love the look of the shine in the metal as well. I have unscrewed the handle, and it is what it is. There is a set screw that is used to thread both head and handle together. I can imagine it would get rusted if you soaked it in water, but honestly why would you do that. It just needs a wipe down after use and good to go. Don't be scared of the negative review. If you don't get a defective one, then you should be fine. I got a good one and I don't imagine there being many bad ones since the design is very simple. Just get this one and call it a day. Very nice quality.
Purchased this to use with my Delonghi Dedica. I didn't want to spend to much and figured I would try this. Perfect fit and it works great! Love the weight, look, and feel. Both easy to use and clean. Feels just right in the hand. Not too big or too small. Definitely beats the plastic tamper my machine came with. Makes tamping my espresso grounds a lot better. The weight definitely helps with the tamping and makes it easier to flatten and even out your espresso ground. Overall, I definitely would recommend this product. You can't beat the price for the quality it offers.
