Great slicer
Works as advertised. A tray, 2 sidebars and an end cap. You hold the bread with 1 hand to prevent it from sliding while cutting. We thought it would be taller.Made of bamboo. No cleaning instructions so I imagine you would just wipe it off.Knife does scratch the wood as suspected, but it's a knife rubbing on wood. This came in a plain brown cardboard box, and there isn't a manufacturer stamped on the product, so I'd imagine several vendors are selling the same product. Look for this at a cheaper price.
Easy way for slicing your sourdough bread.
Beautiful piece, wood is sturdy and the size is perfect. However it doesn’t really work perfectly. You can adjust the thickness or thinness of your slices. And the guide to slice is not always straight across from one another. You have to make sure the wood slots are installed correctly or you will get uneven cuts. If you like thick bread this will be perfect, harder to use if you would like a thinner sandwich slice.Sending back for a more expensive hand crank cutter.
About a year ago my daughter decided she wanted to try her hand at making sourdough bread which meant for the past year I have been buying thing to help her with this. She has really made a lot of strides but the one thing that has continued to be a struggle was the cutting of the bread. Usually the bottom is slightly hard which makes it hard to cut through it, and when you add in that its hard to keep a straight cut when you’re fighting to get through the bottom it kind of becomes a nightmare! This little cutting guide has really helped her with keeping the thickness of the slices consistent. One not so great aspect is that because we have to use a very sharp breadknife to cut the bread it does cut into the wood parts of this slightly. Although it hasn’t been a problem yet, I could see this really causing issues if the wood starts chipping off.One last really nice quality is that it folds up and stores inside of itself so that you can store it easily. This whole ‘bread journey’ she is on has taken up SO MUCH of my cabinets, so having something that didn’t add too much more is nice.
It is made well.
Highlights:* Solid bamboo construction* Easy to assemble and disassemble* All parts fit inside the tray for compact storage* Rubber feet to keep it stable during cutting with replacement feet provided* Can be used as a serving tray, crumb catcher or slicing guide* Guides for thicker or thinner slices* Fits nearly any size loafI’ve been using a 2-part crumb catching tray for years when I slice my loaves of bread. While that was great for making cleanup easier by preventing the crumbs from scattering everywhere, I always struggled with slicing the loaf thinly and evenly. This combo bread slicing board is elegant to look at - made of bamboo. Its primary function is to help you slice your loaf of bread with guides for your knife on either side of the loaf. The tray itself has slots that not only hold the side guides in place, but also allow crumbs to fall down into the tray. With the guides in place, you can fit a loaf that’s up to 8.5” wide and as long as you want. If your loaf is taller than the guides are high (about 3.5”), you can still use the guides, but have to be more careful as your knife can only fit on one side until you make a partial cut.The end piece is intended to stabilize the side guides and can fit anywhere along their length, but I find it most useful to put the end guide into the first set of slots and then slide the bread down to the end after each cut.The side guides have two different thicknesses. Depending on which end you use (end “A” or “B”) for cutting, you’ll either make thinner or thicker slices - just be sure to put the side guides in with the same letters on the ends. Since half of the guides are one thickness and the other half are the other thickness, my method of sliding the loaf toward the end after each cut works out well - just put the end board in the first set of slots for the thickness you want to cut. The store listing shows the end piece inserted with its slots toward the loaf but I like putting it in the reverse direction so that board’s flat side is toward to the loaf. That way it’s just a tad easier to wipe off after use.Speaking of that, cleanup is easy. All parts can be easily removed, wiped off and then stored in the tray. I’m not a fan of putting wood products in my dishwasher and the bamboo has a smooth finish so you probably won’t need to do more than a quick hand wipe anyway. After disassembling the slicing guides and removing the top piece, you can empty the crumbs out of the tray and use it as a serving tray. The sides have smooth handles cut out for easy carrying. There are anti-slip pads on the bottom four corners to help keep everything stable and stationary while slicing. A spare set of pads are even provided just in case you need them.Overall, this is a really compact system to store in a drawer. It’s a snap to set up, clean and put away. Plus, it fits nearly any size loaf you could want including baguettes. Highly recommended product for design, aesthetics, functionality and value!
