Most households have that "family butter dish" -- the bit of butter left on the counter so it's soft enough to butter fresh bread, but also ends up with bits of toast crumbs and weird convenience-based scrapings (like the shavings off the top if the butter was still cold or a divot where someone buttered an ear of corn). Not the pretty butter, but the best stuff for most applications.We have a cat. We discovered that at night she was treating herself to a bit of butter. (Yuck!) So clearly, a covered butter dish was in order. I'd say that even without a cat, it always feels (and probably is) cleaner to have a cover for the family butter.I came across a pretty china butter dish from my mother. Glass plate with a pretty round cover. It did the job. Not particularly our style, but it did remind me of my mom!There were two main issues with this pretty butter dish: first, that a round cover to the dish isn't very easy to get a grip on. While our household is made up of adults (no point in our young adult kids moving out in this economy!), not all the hands are very large. One of my girls, in particular, has pretty small hands. Especially with a slippery glass cover, it took two hands for her to manage the butter, which understandably drove her nuts!Also, when you're buttering a bit of bread and have some left on the knife, what do you do with it? Especially at the current price of butter, you don't waste it by washing it down the drain! So the edges of the pretty plate ended up with smears of butter, which transferred to the lid, which then sometimes got transferred to the countertop. It was a mess.So I set out to find a better butter dish, and I think I won!The only thing I would love to see added would be a bit of extra width on one side to keep a butter knife on. That would be convenient. I saw some that were styled that way, but they lacked features I preferred here.1-Material: lightweight, not easy to break, dishwasher safe, enough texture to grip easily even if your hands were damp or someone got messy with the butter.2-Size and Shape: easy to maneuver the cover, even with smaller hands, holds either the chunky or skinny shaped sticks of butter (living in the Mountain West I end up with one shape from WalMart and another shape from Costco, so I need to fit either one!)3-Butter scraper ends: absolutely. Keeps butter within the butter zone and off the lid.4- No more kitty nibbles. Blech! The lid is secure enough to keep her out of the butter and the lack of smears on the side of the dish means she's not rewarded in any way for sneaking on the counter at night.As mentioned, I'd love a little extra width to balance a butter knife on one side, but I'm very happy with this purchase. We'll keep Mom's pretty china dish for Thanksgiving or something ;)

Fewer butter fingers
These (I bought 2) have replaced old butter dishes made of aluminum and china, and they look great and are much easier to handle. They are well designed for look and function.

Great Butter dish
I was looking for the classic glass etched butter dish, but they have gotten expensive these days. I was also concerned about it slipping, dropping and breaking, which is what happened to my old one. So I spent a lot of time looking for one that had some sort of handle on the top. In the end I simply got this economical simple butter dish, and figured if it slipped, being plastic, it wouldn't break on me. What I did not expect is that it had an easy grip sort of texture to it, sort of like my favorite guitar picks, that look smooth, but they have an easy to hold micro grip somehow. No top handle needed at all. And I haven't tested it, but I am pretty sure if me, (or my cat) knocked it off the counter, it would be unharmed in any way. So, this is perfect. I also like the low little walls on the ends that brace the butter when you are slicing off a dab. Nothing slips around. I move fast around the kitchen when I'm cooking, so a little feature like that saves me time and aggravation that a slippery slab of butter would do me, like in my old classic glass butter dish. So this is a winner. If I had any reason to, I'd buy another one, but this will probably last forever. Good job!

Works well. I have this located on my counter. In trh spring we always have ants. No ants have been able to get into the dish. It seals very well. It also cleans up easily. Very happy with this purchase.
