One of my all time favorite kitchen utensils is strainers, like this one, in smaller sizes. Sadly, they all seem to rust quickly. I was thrilled to see that Calphalon brand created one using stainless steel.This strainer is apparently entirely stainless steel with the exception being the coating on the handle, which makes it easy to grip and keeps it from being too hot to handle.The dimensions for this strainer make it versatile. At nearly 12” long with a basket size of about 5 3/4” it holds several servings of most foods. The mesh basket is two layers of mash rather than just one. This creates a very fine strainer, which works well with things that go through the holes in a more traditional strainer. For example, I typically rinse crumbled ground beef and I’m dismayed when part of my beef goes down the drain. This fine mesh will work perfectly.The strainer has a loop at the top which allows it to rest on the edge of a bowl. The handle coating is a medium dark blue. It’s not quite navy, but it’s fairly dark.The basket size is a good option for cooking for a smaller number of people. It works well for rinsing one or two serving of fruit or vegetables at a time.Care: online information recommends handwashing, and I’m sure to do that so as to keep this in good shiny condition. I’ll be hand washing it and then drying it as much as possible by hand and allowing it room to air dry. Usually the weakness in this type of product is around the rim so I think it’s important to dry it effectively.

Well-Made Stainless Steel Strainer With Thoughtful Detail
This Calphalon Edge stainless steel strainer is a very useful size. It works especially well for straining into quart containers and jars, which I do fairly often, as well as into medium sized bowls. It is slightly larger than a quart container, but still very practical for that purpose. In fact, that is exactly how I used it today.To try it out, I made bone broth and needed to strain out the bones and vegetables. I strained the broth directly into a quart jar, and it worked well. The mesh is fine and did an effective job separating the liquid from the solids.The strainer appears to be well made and sturdy overall. The rivets that secure the strainer to the handle feel solid and well attached. The loop opposite the handle, which is meant to rest on the lip of the container you are straining into, has a thoughtful design detail. On the back of the loop where it curves, there is a small ridge that creates friction so the strainer stays in place and does not slip around as much.The handle is coated with thermoplastic rubber, which feels like a dense rubber material. It is very comfortable to hold and provides good traction, especially when things get slippery during straining.At $13, this feels like a very fair price. Overall, this is a solid, well constructed kitchen tool that seems like it will hold up well over time.
