A fantastic honing rod!

This high carbon steel honing rod is so wonderfully made and finished that it really impresses me! The entire rod and handle are balanced beautifully and the handle of the rod fits perfectly in my hand. It is easy to use the steel to quickly attain a razor edge on most any knife(with decent steel). This is my go to sharpening tool for daily maintenance of all of my frequently used knives. I love how pretty this rod is and how fancy the handle and inset are. This is a great sharpening tool and a must for any cook!

An aesthetic step above standard honing steels

Quality? Beautiful and solidHandle? Synthetic (resin maybe?) not woodNotables?- Honing ridges on only on half the rod- No way to hang the steel by the pommelThis a beautiful addition to my kitchen knife set that boasts a similar motif. The handle is well sealed with little gaps to trap crud, or debris. Whished the guard-rod transition was more tapered than just 90 degrees. The guard transition may harbor bacteria but even older ones with plenty of gaps and crevices posed little issue on a honing steel. A tapered transition would just be a nicer sanitary touch. The half-smooth half-ridged steel may be a dealbreaker for some. It is a nice option to have a smooth side but I usually prefer a honing steel that is completely ridged. The nuance to a blade between honing with a smooth or the ridged rod is very minuscule. The overall quality is nice. I would like having a nice ebony wood handle over the synthetic one, but will sit well with my kitchen set.

It works.

This is a good honing steel. A bit different from other steels I have owned. This one is a little shorter and the guard is smaller. And it fits in my drawer better! The main characteristic that takes some getting used to is the dual sided steel. I take a few angled swipes down the coarse side and then flip the knife to run it up the same side. Then I do the same on the other side of the steel which is more fine. The knife blade is certainly sharp afterwards. Overall I like this piece. The handle has a stylish designed look and balances the whole thing rather well. I recommend this.

Impressive looking fine finish steel

The Cangshan ELBERT Series High-Carbon 8-Inch Honing Steel comes in a very nice presentation box, and it's build quality and appearance is very impressive. It is very suitable as a gift for someone who needs to keep their knives honed. It is more of a fine sharpener, as the ridges are pretty fine. This means you'll need to use it regularly to keep your knives from getting too dull. There is also a smother side for fine honing.

Beautiful honing steel, dual surface not as practical

My current honing steel is honest to goodness form following function, it's not much to look at but I have no complaints about the results. This Cangshan honing steel is a looker! It has a similar full tang design like their knives giving it a certain heft and a balance feel in hand, all wrapped up in a beautifully smooth handle and finished with a striking mosaic rivet.Looks aside I was also intrigued by its distinguishing feature with a half grooved and half smooth surfaces on the honing steel itself, intended for weekly straightening and daily finishing respectively. It's an interesting design that further extends the honing idea to daily use but in practice I found it a little cumbersome because it is exactly half and half, meaning when I alternatively swipe the knife on either side of the steel I also have to rotate the steel, making a typically quick honing task less so. I did notice the changeover point on the steel is not exactly centered with the handle, I thought it was odd but realized in use that's intentional because of the angle the human arms hold the knife and steel. That made the previous usability issue more surprising, given the thoughtfulness of this design decision. I wonder if it could be solved by having 4 surfaces alternating between grooved and smooth, but The small surface areas of the steel may require more coordination in use.I really wanted to love this honing steel as I do their knives, especially with an innovative dual surface design and a beautiful finish (and I absolutely love the weighty feel), but its final rating is ultimately marred by the usability issue.

WOW, the quality of a German knife steel!

At twice the price this would be a good value. I have two German knife steels that are not one bit nicer than this one, but certainly cost more. This steel is one heavy, solid piece of steel with a handle fitted around it. The overall mass is wonderful as it helps keep the steel stable when you are using it. Fit and finish are top notch. I love everything about this! Highly recommended!
