Good value if you use the 40% off coupon

This knife is beautifully presented in a nice box, perfect for gift giving. I'm our home cook, and I use a chef's knife multiple times a day. It is the most important knife in the kitchen. My favorite knife is a simple food service chef's knife that I have had for (I think) almost 20 years. I keep it very sharp and I'll compare this knife to that one. This knife is attractive. The copy on its product page talks about a lot of superlatives, but doesn't give many facts. Here is what I can figure out from my tests, experience, and the information provided. The handle is ABS, which is a sturdy plastic that is used in many things from plumbing pipes to Legos. It is a decent material that is used in knife handles, but it is not a premium material. The knife material is noted to be high carbon Japanese steel. Japanese steel is usually pretty good stuff, but premium knives will actually list the type of steel used. This one does not so we are left to guess. This knife has a bolster, which suggests that it could be a forged knife. Forged knives are more expensive to manufacture than stamped knifes. Some people like a bolster, others do not. A bolster can add strength and durability to a knife, but makes it a bit more difficult to sharpen. Everyone has their preference. The copy says that its edge is 10 degrees...what?? The narrower the degrees the sharper a knife is perceived. However, narrow degree knives are more fragile as the steel is thinner. Most Euro/American knives are at 20 degrees and Japanese knives are often around 15 degrees. There are knives that have a 10 degrees edge that are used to cut soft foods, but I have never encountered them.. When you sharpen a knife you should sharpen at the proper angle. The literature in this knife's box suggests using a sharpening stone. Stones are the best way to sharpen a knife, if you know what you are doing. I have been cooking for over 50 years and I can't use a stone to its full efficiency. Instead I use manual and electric sharpeners, however, most sharpeners sharpen at 20 and 15 degrees (I did fine a few that sharpen at 12 degrees). I'm not sure that this knife is actually 10 degrees, as I have no way of testing. So how well does it cut? Pretty well. I cut a variety of vegetables using this knife and my trusty food service knife (that I run through a manual sharpener a few strokes. every time that I use it). I felt my old knife (which is super sharp) was a bit sharper, but this knife did fine.I you get past the copy and just view this knife at its price point of around $27.60 (using the 40% off coupon) I think it is a good value. It is sharp and cuts well. It feels decent in hand, and it comes in a nice box. My only real concern is keeping a 10 degree edge sharp. Unless you know what you are doing a sharpening stone can be tricky and I could not find any consumer level sharpeners that sharpened at 10 degrees.

My wife rarely ever cooks so I'm taken the title of Iron Chef! (at home edition)

I am the Iron Chef of small suburban development thanks to my new KnifeSaga 8 inch Chef's knife! The price says "Entry-Level" but the feel and performance say "if you buy something else you're just wasting your money!".The knife comes in a presentation gift box that's so nice that before you get it open you're thinking "well, this is either completely overhyped and a majority of the price is in this packaging..." or that the knife is so good that it just HAD to be presented in a way that conveys the quality that it respresents!". I can assure you it's the later of the two impressions! This is a high-quality knife, I could simply repeat the features in the Amazon listing but instead I'll just give you my impressions while holding and examining it, and then using the knife instead.First of all it's weighted perfectly, it feels like an extension of your own hand. It has balance and a feeling of quality that I've only felt when handling knives 6-20 times the price (no exaggeration). The ergonomic handle fits a wide range of hand sizes, no matter who you are, you'll feel confident using it!It is sharp enough to use immediately, but I ran it across a sharpening stone about 8 times per side to give it a razor-sharp edge that I hope will last for weeks or even months! The high carbon steel should hold an edge for quite a while, just don't skimp on maintenance (clean immediately and store dry)! I cooked Mother's Day Dinner for my wife and daughter last Sunday and it did not disappoint! I trimmed and then cut beef fillet, broccoli, shallots, romaine lettuce, and a couple other ingredients for the dinner and it sliced through everything effortlessly; I really felt like I was on Iron Chef!It cleans up nicely, a little rinse, wipe off on a clean towel - ready for more action!I recommend you give this knife a try!Like I said it comes with a edge but I sharpened mine before I tried to cut anything so keep in mind that my experience INCLUDED honing the edge. Maintenance is more important than the knife itself...a cheap knife can be made to perform well but may not last long.My opinion is that this knife will do both - perform well and last a long, long time!

It feels so good

I have a knife block with chef knives that cost more than this one but this has become my favorite. This knife is balanced and the shape conforms perfectly to my hand. The curved shape of the blade allows me to easily dice and slice food. I loved it so much that I got the whole set.

Good mid grade knife but definitely not a show piece

The Good:-Full tang-Quality handle-Razor sharp out of box (basically, every knife)-One of the most practical shapesThe OK:-Design is simple (not imaginative or colorful)-Blade is probably forged (doesn’t have the attractive look of folded steel)-Proprietary steel (might be better than many but there’s no real way of knowing without extensive testing, known steels have info readily available regarding edge retention and corrosion resistance)-Giant logo (personally don’t love giant logos)The Bad:-NothingIf you’re searching for reasonable value knife that is made to a good standard this might be it. It’s one the most practical shapes for a knife you’ll use all the time. Feels good in the hand and the handle is well finished. It’s not a flashy knife but will do what it’s designed for with ease. Full tang is always a plus and it’s razor sharp out of the box like most every knife you can buy. They did put a giant logo on the blade and don’t tell you exactly what steel it’s made out of but I’m confident it’s at least as good as the average German knife steel. I feel like if this knife is listed at an exceptionally good price, it’s a good option for something you’d use every day. If you’re looking for a showpiece this is not what you want.
