We've been cutting into the top shell of chestnuts with a small curved knife. This cutter tool works better and faster, and the finger claws help you pry open the shell. The finger claws a made of thin metal and easily distorted. But overall this kit works better than the knife.
Every fall my husband's brother's family shares chestnuts from their tree with us. However, getting the chestnuts ready to eat has been time consuming and frequently not worth the effort. This tool fits well into my hands and I like that it has the ability to score the chestnuts to allow the steam to escape when baking the chestnuts. It's stainless steel, so it should hold up over time. However, it does take a lot of hand strength to actually cut the chestnuts and my hands hurt a lot after doing just a few. The thumb picks seem like a good idea, but I have challenges with my hands and they weren't as helpful for me as I thought they would be. The picks are good for chestnuts as well as for any nuts; however, they are hard for me to hold because they are so thin. I have arthritis and while I'm sure this chestnut cutter tool is very beneficial for lots of "able-bodied" young people, it really is more trouble than it's worth for me. The cost of the tool (if it is beneficial to you) is reasonable. I've paid much more than that for other types of nut crackers over the years.
Don't waste your time this is an inferior product very cheaply made
Great for chestnuts
Around holiday time, many people serve special dishes and foods. Roasted chestnuts are one of those foods. Raw chestnuts easy to find on the Internet. To make roasted chestnuts even more enjoyable, use a cutter tool like this to prepare them. This set includes all you need to successfully score chestnuts before roasting and peel them after roasting, including finger guards and picks. Scoring ensures that the roasted chestnuts will be easier to open.Just place a chestnut, flat side down, into the flower shaped depression of the cutter. Lower the cutting side over the rounded end of the chestnut and press to create an X-shaped cut. Do this before roasting. Just rinse the tool under hot water and dry to clean it when you're done. The cutter performed flawlessly, rendering the roasted chestnuts much easier to peel, especially the papery inner membrane. I roasted mine at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes. Center rack on baking sheet, cut side up.Why not make roasted chestnuts part of your holidays? It's easy with this special purpose cutter. Highly recommended!
We didn't really understand the point of the finger guards. This gadget feels purpose built to open chestnuts, although it kind of hurt the palm of my hand when using it. This may be something that gets better over time with skill. I sure would appreciate a rubberized grip, but at least it's a pretty cheap gadget.
