Cons

  • Requires approximately 20 hours to freeze for optimal results, which may be inconvenient if you're in need of ice quickly.
  • The initial investment might be higher compared to standard ice trays, but the benefits may justify the cost for enthusiasts.

Works very well, compact, great value for money

This product is overall very good. While there is a faintly visible line where the two parts join, I was very impressed. It’s easy to use and takes up surprisingly little freezer space. It produces very clear ice (tested with regular filtered water), which makes beautiful cocktails and spirits on the rocks. The product also seems to be high quality (I ordered the stainless steel version).Overall, I consider it excellent value for money and would definitely recommend it.

I liked the first pair so much I bought more!!

I really do like these they make regular water look like a clear ball of ice! I feel that the two pack with the box to hold the balls with the ice grabber is a great value. They appear to be a good quality and I hope they will hold up. Also they are easy to use and remove the balls of ice. I had to get more because my nephew like to make his sprite look fancy!

Mostly Works

(updated- see end of review)Perfectly clear ice seems pretty cool. This was the least expensive maker I could find at about $13 on sale. That doesn't seem like a great price for what it is: a silicone mold with an insulated cup.I've made about 5 ice balls so far and the results have been decent, but not perfect. Most of the ball turns out nice and clear, but every one has had bubbles and whiteness at the very bottom (see photo). I don't know if this is a design flaw, a limitation of physics or something else. I notice the same problem in most of the pictures others have uploaded on their reviews of this product. Note: I have only been using tap water. I haven't had access to mineral water to test with a 50/50 mix of tap and mineral water as the directions that come with it suggest. I did try using hot water. It still had the same result, but the bottom area beneath the ball wasn't fully frozen, even after 24 hours in the freezer. That sort of proves that the insulating cup is doing its job and allowing it to freeze from the top down.My only other complaint is the size of the cubes is a little too large. I would prefer more like a 2" diameter, but I couldn't find any makers in that size.Overall, this seems like an overpriced novelty that does not turn out perfect results. I'm undecided if I am going back to whiskey stones or use these imperfect clear ice balls.UPDATE: I tried using water straight out of my well, which is very hard, and it performed the same as tap water and ended up with cloudy ice at the bottom of the ball. I couldn't find mineral water that wasn't sparkling at the store, so I tried some SmartWater. It says it is distilled water with electrolytes added. The balls made with 100% smart water came out clearer without the cloudiness at the bottom. Interesting result!

Great, mostly clear ice cube maker

These ice cube makers make nearly perfect, clear ice cubes. If I had to guess, I'd say 96 to 98% clear, with some artifacts within the ice on the top side. The silicone molds are fairly easy to remove from the metal container. Very easy to use and they make your drinks look better and it appears the ice cubes take longer to melt when they're nearly perfect. I previously used cheaper, plastic round ice cube makers which were decent, but definitely did not produce very clear ice cubes. These are a few steps up above those plastic ones and are worth the price.

Super solid for the price!

I purchased this on sale via Amazon Prime. ($9 and change). It had solid reviews, so I went for it.I opened the box, thoroughly washed the metal cup and silicone part, filled the metal cup to the “min” line with fridge filtered water, then SLOWLY inserted the silicone piece.I inserted it until the water just came out of the top hole, and left it like that when I placed it into the fridge. (See attached photo).Almost exactly 24 hours later, I came and removed the silicone insert. (I grabbed the silicone and gave it a twist like opening a jar top). Came out perfectly. The excess ice from the bottom of the metal container was still attached to the silicone piece at the bottom, while the silicone halves were still together holding the ice ball within.I placed this excess ice under a running faucet of cold water until it broke off from the bottom of the silicone. Then I opened the silicone halves to remove the perfectly formed ice ball.Initially it was a foggy white. (See the attached photo where I took a photo with the newly removed ice ball with the three components. Then I ran some cold water from the faucet over this hazy white ice ball, and it became a perfectly clear ball of ice.Perfect…on my very first try.I love it.I placed the ice ball in a zip lock bag, completely removed all the air from the bag, zipped the bag shut, and placed it back in the freezer.I’m making a second ball as I write this.Let’s see how well the ice balls last while in a zip lock bag in the freezer. For under $10 USD, it’s a steal.

It just makes round cloudy ice

Coming from small insulated coolers to make large ice blocks, I wanted something smaller and compact. This fits the bill. It makes clear ice balls but they're not perfectly free of gas bubble trails once it's done. It does do directional cooling but it leaves behind a chunk of ice at the bottom of the stainless steel cup after every use. I'll probably go back to my directional cooling method using my small insulated cooler in the second fridge but I'll keep this one around for my main fridge as it's compact. To make it work well, you'll always have to remove all traces of ice from the previous batch and add room temp water.
