Overall disappointing
This “corn peeler” works… but it is not easy to use and does not do a great job. For comparison I tested this alongside a more conventional corn stripper, the kind with a serrated blade that you drag along the cob towards you.First, I was impressed with the sturdiness of this tool and the sharpness of the blade end. The blade is welded to the shaft of the tool but seems very firmly attached. There is a really good weight to it as well.I had been reluctant to use the conventional corn stripper because I don’t love the idea of dragging a sharp blade towards me, and I was really happy to find this corn stripper that is designed to be pushed away instead. Unfortunately, because you have to hold the corn while you use it, you are essentially pushing the blade towards your hand, so it is still not safe. The blade, while sharp, is not sharp enough to glide smoothly through the kernels, so you essentially have to keep making short jabs, giving you lots of opportunities to cut yourself. If you’re not careful to angle the blade down into the cob, it will slip and cut just the top of each kernel, leaving most of the corn on the cob. On the other hand, the serrated blade on the more convential stripper slid through the corn with very little pressure and ended up feeling much safer despite my initial reservations. The conventional stripper also cut whole kernels much more reliably. Pulling the blade towards you also resulted in less corn scatter.I tested both corn strippers with raw and cooked corn. This product was pretty hopeless with the raw corn, but to be fair it is advertised specifically to be used with cooked corn. It works a little bit better with cooked corn, but there wasn’t as much difference as you’d expect. It also meant that I had to first boil the whole ears in a big pot that then needed to be washed.The first pair of pictures is with the raw corn. The second pair is with corn that was boiled for about 5-6 minutes then allowed to cool for about 5 minutes until it was easier to handle. In both sets you can see that the conventional stripper cut the corn in smooth strips that easily separated into pretty close to whole kernels. This push-style stripper resulted in a lot of partial kernels. The results did improve slightly with practice, but then I ended up pushing the blade into my thumb and stopped.I gave this product three stars for its build quality and because it technically did what it claimed to do. It just wasn’t easy or safe, and there are better tools that do the same job better. I honestly will probably just stick with my chef’s knife.

I wish they worked a little better ...
I was pleasantly surprised to receive 2 of these ... we often get a bunch of corn in season and freeze it so now I can get my room mate to help out! These actually work quite well although not quite the "one simple stroke and it's done" way I had hoped for. Getting it started is the key ... and then keeping the pressure on through the downward motion. It definitely made less of a mess and I got some really nice looking kernels. In truth, it depended very much on the individual cobs which makes perfect sense. I found cooking them for a couple of minutes (I just used the wet paper towel in the microwave method) definitely helped with smooth removal. Practice makes perfect!
