Great mat for catching coffee maker mishaps

While I originally ordered this stone dish drying mat to stay next to my coffee maker as a drying mat dedicated for coffee related dishes, I realized quickly that a better use in our house for it was underneath the coffee maker itself. The stone mat is perfect for catching water spills and the occasional overflow that occurs when the morning brew encounters a carafe that isn’t empty. I’ve been impressed with the construction of both the stone, the base and even the plastic top as it has help up very well under the weight of the coffee maker that is in almost constant use.When I was first using it for coffee related dishes, I did find the size to be a bit cramped but I have to admit we use 32oz travel mugs and several 28oz coffee cups. While the cramped feel really is due to our choice of large cups, the mat is a perfect fit under our 14 cup coffee maker and has been able to soak up a lot of spills. Fortunately, I haven’t seen any significant staining from coffee spills but those are caught and cleaned pretty quick when they happen.The mat is very modern looking and is so much better than a cloth drying mat. I really like the weight of it and if I was using it for dishes, I wouldn’t worry about it moving around or slipping on the countertop.

Wish the DE mat was a bit thicker

I prefer this much more to other dish drying mats that use DE because the (plastic) grate keeps the dishes out of contact with the DE. Yes this is compressed but powdered DE is the same thing I use for ants and even though the mat isn’t as friable I still don’t like the idea of dishes that people are going to eat off of touching it.I also like the separation because I feel like it’s more hygienic. The plastic grate that is in contact with dishes and moisture is easy to wash. I don’t care how quickly the DE absorbs/evaporates water the point of drying dishes is to get the wash water off and away from the dishes not to let it marinate in it even if only for a few seconds. And this way there’s no “backwash” from a clean dish touching the “clean and dry” DE mat that has another “clean dish” in its place a few minutes ago. Or a few hours ago. I don’t care that’s cross contamination and the grade prevents that.This is a nice complement to the regular dish rack I already have, it fits underneath that catch tray so it’s not taking up any more space when it’s not being used. But I’m wondering what can be done to improve the air circulation around the DE mat. WouldHaving a grate underneath it put it under too much tension? I have another DE drying mat and it’s sturdy sure but this is a tiny thin little thing and I worry about the strain I’m putting on it by handling it more frequently to thoroughly dry it than I would need to if the mat could also get some space between it and the solid tray underneath it.This comes with a piece of sandpaper but I won’t be sanding this, I really do not want to be touching DE or risk getting near anybody’s face

To small for purpose

I dont know what kind of tiny dishes they used for the product photos but this thing is very small. Its only 16x9... (a piece of paper is 8.5 x 11, so just imagine). If you have more than two coffee mugs and a bowl you’re already out of space. Something this small should at least have dividers to hold the dishes vertically so it can hold more than one plate or a pan or something.Also the way its designed is kind odd. ive seen diotomaceos mats on amazon and they are not encased in plastic. The material iteslf is supposed to absorb the water completely and the whole point of eco friendly diatomaceous earth is lost on all this unnecessary plastic. Its literally like having a dish tray with a sponge inside which just means more parts to clean. And it doesnt look as modern, flat, sleek and minimalistic than the plain stone ones.IMHO, the only dish racks that make sense are the ones that actually drain into the sink. If you aren't near the sink or you have one of those high lip farmhouse sinks, you're better off with something silicone, or something with grooves where the air just dries the runoff naturally.I did actually find a use for it though. So three stars for that! I ended up putting it on my windowsill to hold 3 of my plants that I couldn't find drip trays for. It is a perfect drip tray because its small enough to fit on a window sill and can hold the 3 small plants nicely without needing anything underneath. So yeah... its a great plant to arrange plants and never have to worry about flooding the drop saucers.All in all: Absurdly small for dishes. The stone-inside-a-tray design is over-engineered nonsense (like a tray with a sponge in it), but it makes a surprisingly good windowsill plant holder.
