Finally Peace of Mind!

Not sure how we ever lived without this. Our freezer defrost had stopped working , but we with the help of these thermometers we now know when it is time to go back in and manually defrost our freezers. All I can think of each time we see this when we go to the fridge or freezer is how did we live without this thermometer for all the past years. In fact why are freezers and fridges not pre built with the thermometers?? This should be an automatic gift when they sell you a freezer or a fridge! This would have saved our food all those times the freezers died in the power outagesThe peace of mind is well worth the price. One for the fridge and one for the freezer. Never realized just how cold the freezer really can get or how warm the fridge really has been all this time. Learning a LOT about our freezer and fridge with the help of the data we are collecting with these thermometers! Thank you again for making these!

Broken mess that fails when you need it.

These are a total roll of the dice -- the first one i got worked perfectly even next to a borrowed expensive thermometer BUT these last 3 i bought NONE of them work properly because they always read way too high which is not all that bad BUT when you need to know the exact temperature +/- 1 degree and these want to read 10+ too high it becomes an issue.Take your chances with these if you feel lucky but at least the low temp seems to work right.

They mostly agree, but are slow to do so.

The first thing I did was plug in the remote, corded thermistor (probe)into their jacks (the cords are about 3'-3.5' long) pop in the batteries, and place them in different climates ranging from 36F to 98.6F (no, not THERE. Under my arm pits, silly!) and humidity from 32% to 75% to see if they agree with each other. They did within .2 to .4F and within 1% on humidity. - an acceptable range considering these were not controlled environments.Then I realized the are also temp sensors inside the base unit to tell the temp without using the remote probes. So I repeated the same tests without probes. Here, one unit was 4.5F higher than the other. And also higher the reading on it's own remote probe. But if I let the unit sit there for 10 minutes, it will eventually "catch up" and the two units will mostly agree. I'm not sure how this happens - these are already pretty slow thermistors (the corded probes are standard epoxied 10K's), but this one sensor inside is EXTRA slow. The sensors are only polled every 10 seconds (to reduce battery life by doing less math) which makes them seem even slower if you're sitting there impatiently watching them.So they're kinda the opposite of "Instant read" thermometers. More like "Set it and forget it!" (and come back to read it in 10-15 minutes).. This really isn't a problem for most applications, only when you move them between temperature extremes.The units only read and display one temp sensor at a time. You either use the internal one, or the remote probe if it's plugged into it's jack. If you want to see both temps, you have plug and unplug the probe (and wait up to 10 seconds for the display to switch to current sensor). You can also turn off the unit completely by holding the ON/OFF button down for 5 seconds, but you'll lose all the min/max history data. This will save batteries, but they should last 6-12 months on a single GOOD battery even when left on 24/7/365. And remember to use the remote probes to measure freezer or Texas summers rather than placing the whole unit in those hot/cold areas.
