I've used both methods and it is sturdy and does the job either way with a heavy dish load. I have not encountered any issues with slipping or sliding, but the dish rack does get overloaded and tip, so balancing your items as you go is key. It has a low profile, neutral look that works with most kitchen designs. My only qualm is the drying mat has no way to drain the pooled water without completely picking it up and dumping it- a drain function would have been welcome.

Perfect addition for overflow dishes from countertop drying rack
When I do a lot of cooking or baking, my countertop drying rack is always full to the brim with large pots, bowls and small appliance parts, making it hard to find room for dinner plates and flatware. This rack is a great solution for us! It fits perfectly on the small side of our sink and saves me from having to towel dry a lot of dishes.I found that it doesn’t slip around once in place and is very sturdy when positioned front to back over the sink. I use it mostly for plates and lids as it isn’t really designed for glasses or cups. However, I have found that with the way it sits snugly in the small side of the sink, I can actually lean large tumblers off its edge against the side of the sink as a bonus.The flatware holder is wider and deeper than my countertop rack’s, making it very handy for serving ware and cooking utensils that just don’t fit anywhere else.Looks great and stores easily under the sink when not in use.
