So cute ! Great size. Looks great on my counter. Love the wooden base accent.
I must tell the truth in that I ordered this $16.90 "Aoohooa" brand egg basket (Amazon ASIN B0FX3ZL11F) not for collecting eggs in a henhouse, nor even for storing store-bought eggs in the refrigerator (as I get 'em at Costco in those two-dozen-sized stackable plastic packs), but I do very much like the more mundane use of it as a "K-Cup Organizer" as explained in the Amazon listing. For me, I have a variety of countertop bowls and baskets which hold the fruits of the season, whether that's apples, oranges, lemons, pomelos, grapefruits, etc., where, as you can see from my photos, it fits in with the other openly aired fruits. However, let's first give a nod to the designer's original intent, which is collecting henhouse eggs where a wire-and-wood-bottom egg basket is one of those farm tools that looks deceptively simple but is actually designed around the realities of collecting eggs from live, moving, occasionally uncooperative hens. The way it's supposed to be used in a henhouse is a bit different from how it behaves when we fill it with cold, uniformly sized grocery-store eggs on a kitchen counter.A wire and wood bottom egg basket is carried with you as you move from one nest box to another in the henhouse. You hold the basket in one hand and lift eggs out of each nest with the other hand. Eggs are added gradually as you make your way through the coop rather than all at once. The wire sides protect the eggs from bumps as you walk around the coop. The basket may brush against roosts, walls, or hens, and the wire structure absorbs some of that impact so the eggs are not pressed directly against anything hard. The wiring also allows bedding, feathers, and droppings to fall out as more eggs are placed on top of each other.I measured the nicely-spot-welded wire basket at about 6-1/2 inches wide at the top and about 5 inches wide at the bottom, although the wood base added a quarter inch. In a farming environment, the basket is wider at the top so your hand can easily reach in and place eggs without bumping them against the sides. A narrow opening would make it harder to lower eggs gently into the basket while moving from nest to nest, causing you to tend to "drop" them in instead of gently lowering them into the basket. The resulting slightly tapered cylindrical shape also keeps the eggs settled toward the bottom. The design also keeps the basket stable when set down. A narrow bottom and wide top lower the center of gravity and make the basket less likely to tip over when placed on uneven coop flooring.I weighed the basket at 425.8 grams empty on my kitchen scale (about 1 pound) where the handle is flat so it spreads the weight across your fingers to be more comfortable when the basket gets heavy. The handle swivels so the basket can stay level even when your hand tilts or moves. As you bend down to reach into a nest box, the basket can hang straight instead of tipping and letting eggs roll into each other. The swivel also lets you set the basket down without the handle getting in the way, because it can fall to the side instead of sticking upright. The combination of a flat grip and a free-moving hinge makes it easier to carry the basket through tight spaces, avoid bumping eggs, and keep the load balanced as you collect eggs one at a time, but, of course, that's not really how this basket is intended to be used. While this decorative kitchen basket appears to be made out of ersatz "solid" wood, the solid base gives the eggs a stable surface as you continue collecting and if you place the basket on the ground, it prevents picking up wet soiled ground contaminants.Given that eggs from backyard hens vary in size, the basket is designed to hold a mix of small, medium, and large eggs without needing to pack them tightly. Fresh eggs are usually warm when collected, and the open wire design allows air to circulate so they cool gradually. While the Amazon listing claims a capacity of "up to 40 standard eggs at once", the farmer's basket is not meant to be filled to maximum capacity every time. It is a working tool used while moving through the henhouse, picking up eggs one by one, letting dust and feathers fall away, and carrying the eggs safely back to the house or wash area (although generally, in a farming environment, they last longer outside refrigeration when unwashed). As you can see in my photos, I could only fit about 30 Costco eggs into the basket sitting on my countertop without even moving it around, so I think the manufacturer's benchmark claims are perhaps a bit optimistic by at least 25%. I won't ding them for that though, as I doubt many "farmers" are purchasing this basket, especially as its biggest weakness would then be that the base won't likely hold up to outdoor environments and washing fresh eggs with a hose. The base is an oak-grained laminate sheet which is incredibly well done, but the three laminates (top, bottom and edge) are cleverly disguising the fact that it's not "solid" wood, but likely the "wood" underneath the plastic laminate is likely some kind of composite from sawdust. There are three 3/8ths inch diameter foam cushions on the bottom of this basket, further reinforcing the assessment that it's meant for the kitchen more so than for the coop. With the die-cut hen decorating the basket, it's a whimsical reference to what the original purpose might have been, where I get it why the seller emphasizes that it's an egg basket, but, in reality, nobody is fooled. It will likely be filled to the brim with delicious "things" that you might want to keep together on your kitchen countertop.Having described what I think about this basket, keep in mind that this review is written with you in mind, so to help you gain value from my effort to write a useful review, I added closeup images to give you a clear view of the product and how it performs.
Wife approved. Now the backyard chickens need to get to work.
This basket is adorable. My house is, well, a farmhouse. It's not farmhouse decor, it's a real farm! But even farmers like cute stuff, and this is a super cute basket for the day's eggs. I'm not planning to use it to actually gather eggs outside. It's way too pretty for that. I'm using my beat up old egg baskets to gather up the eggs, then putting them on the counter in this pretty little basket. My photo has 7 that I picked up this morning, so the basket will easily hold well over a dozen. (It will definitely be full after evening feeding tonight!)The basket is well made and the wire is thick. The handle is attached firmly and the wooden base adds that perfect "farmhouse" touch. There are no-skid feet on the base as well because, let's face it, nobody wants a basket of eggs sliding off the counter. The metal punched chicken design placard is just perfect for an egg basket. It's cute for that rustic farmhouse look even if you don't have chickens. My favorite thing about the basket is the shape. Most baskets are wide, including at the bottom, which means the eggs roll around when you first set them in place at the bottom. This basket is narrower at the bottom so you can set those first eggs in easily and they don't roll around. As you stack them up, they don't tend to roll around because they nestle in with the other eggs. That's why the narrow bottom works so well. The wide top opening makes it easy to set eggs into the basket and take them out. This is actually a way better shape than most of the baskets I've tried. And the price is phenomenal!!!!
I’m honestly really impressed with this egg basket. It feels solid and well made right out of the box, not flimsy or thin like some wire baskets can be. The metal is sturdy, the finish looks nice on the counter, and the wooden base adds a simple farmhouse touch without feeling overly decorative.Capacity-wise, it holds way more than I expected. I don’t have to make multiple trips when collecting eggs, and everything stays secure thanks to the wide opening and strong handle. The handle is comfortable to grab and doesn’t dig into your hand, even when the basket is full.I also love the open wire design—it allows airflow so the eggs can cool naturally, and it’s super easy to rinse out and dry if needed. Bonus: it looks great on the countertop. I’ve even used it to store K-Cups and fruit when I do not have an overwhelming amount of eggs.Overall, this is a really versatile piece—functional, attractive, and sturdy enough to actually use daily. Definitely a great value for the price.
This basket is large enough to hold a lot of eggs - at least 3 dozen large eggs. It would also be functionable as a kitchen utensil holder for wooden spoons & spatulas, etc., or even for storing fabric napkins (rolled up and placed in the basket vertically). The basket feels very sturdy, the wire is good and thick, and the handle is screwed on rather than just riveted without any threads. The base is made from wood with a weathered/antique finish and it's very well secured to the basket wire. The rivet screws attaching the handle to the basket are a regular silver color and they aren't really consistent with the antique styled basket - I think black rivet screws would provide a more uniform look, otherwise, the basket looks great and is worth the price advertised, at the time I posted my review.
