WORKS GREAT, LOVE IT.
This perfectly prepares a large watermelon just like the company video shows. It is then very easy to cut the melon from the rinds and place it inside storage units in the fridge. This solves the problem of storing a large melon in the fridge. My suggestion would be to cut 1.5 inches from each end of the melon and scrape any melon remaining in the ends with a large spoon. This results in the slices not having rinds on the sides. Also, a bread knife cuts melon far better than a regular knife. Finally, the unit stores perfectly toward the top of a stack of rarely used dinner plates. This will definitely encourage me to buy way more watermelons by removing most of the hassle associated with storing and cutting them up.
I started small and cut some cantaloupe and honeydew with this gadget (works fine for smaller melons). Then I got one of the watermelons I needed to cut. Because I'm short, after trimming the ends off to make it sit flat, I used a mallet to drive the center of the cutter in a bit and let the blade teeth get a head start in the rind. I also stood on a stepstool so I could really lean over & bear down on the handles with my shoulder strength. Went through like butter after that. Once you get the blades in an inch, it goes through pretty smoothly if you just keep pushing down.If you accidentally went off-center when starting the cut and the edge of the gadget hits the melon side and gets "stuck", just pull it up a bit and wiggle it some, and pull the gadget in the direction you need more of a cut before continuing downward. Won't be the most perfect cuts, but it'll get through (one melon was not close to perfectly round, so I found this trick out to correct my miscalculation). What I love about this slicer is not just that it cuts through the melon, saving time, it also holds the pieces upright til you're ready to deal with them, keeping the rest of your space a bit clearer so you can further cut the melon if needed or start storing the slices. That was a huge help because the main reason I hated dealing with big melons is trying to keep the pieces out of my way while I cut others. Don't have to worry about that when they're standing upright and waiting!
An ad popped up on my Grandson's tablet with this watermelon slicer. I can't figure out why he was browsing through kitchen utensils but this on caught his attention, showed it to me and we ordered on. This this works great on melons that fit the diameter of the cutter, medium sized mostly. Makes a nice slice and he always want to go to the market to get another melon.
It’s a useless product for me and I plan to return it. By the time you line up the knife cuts you have to make in the melon to line it up in order to be able to use this product, you could have just cut it by hand. It is very sturdy either and I could see it break/crack in the plastic if it met too much resistance. If you are a caterer or such, maybe having nice looking watermelon cut , uniformly could be nice to the eye, but for everyday normal use, this product is a waste of time and money.
I absolutely love this gadget. It makes cutting all melons so easy. Then you just cut into chunks if you choose.
