Excellent tea knife. Very sturdy and good size. This item is made to separate tea cakes and brake them apart. The knife part is not made for cutting. Once agin it's a tea knife so to the reviews that are negative casue they can't stab or cut stuff well this knife isn't made for that. Clearly people don't do research on products before buying. I think those reviews should be taken down since they didn't use the tea knife as it's intended purpose.
I’m a fan, but the blunted tip that came with it does more damage than good to high quality teas, so I ground a keen tip and polished it up to 3000 on my stones, now it’s brilliant! There is, however, a mild but noticeable chemical odor to it, presumably due to the adhesives they used to put it together.. a few minutes under vacuum should vaporize the volatiles so they don’t impart any flavor to the tea, but I’d imagine that most people aren’t as crazy about tea as I am… haha.. four stars, could be better, but for ten bucks it’s about as good as to be expected.. for the record, I only put a sharp TIP on it, not an edge; otherwise it would cut the leaves from the cake instead of prying them free without damaging them which is the whole point of a tea knife.. it’s a good buy, but I’d definitely recommend spending ten minutes with a whetstone and cleaning up the tip, and at least letting it breathe for a few days so that the glue vapors can disperse entirely before you use it on any expensive teas.. That and a VERY light touch of olive oil to prevent any corrosion is what I do to keep my tools in tip top shape. ~if you take good care of your tools, your tools will take good care of you..
Despite its look Its not sharp which is a good thing or you might cut yourself trying to losen up the tea bricks with it. Works great for its intended purpose and looks good.
Works perfect for Pu'er cakes - waaaaay better (and safer) than using a knife.
The haowei Stainless Steel Pu’er Tea Knife ended up being one of those little purchases that you think will be basic and then you realize, oh wait, this thing is actually kind of awesome. The first time I used it to break apart a tightly pressed pu’er cake, it slid in with way less effort than I expected. I remember thinking, “Where has this been all my tea drinking life?”The wooden handle feels smooth and comfortable, and the weight is just right so it doesn’t feel flimsy or unsafe. One afternoon I was breaking apart a particularly stubborn tea brick that always gives me trouble, and this tool handled it like it was nothing. No slipping, no awkward angles, just clean leverage and control. The needle style tip is sharp enough to get into compressed layers without crumbling everything into dust. If you’ve ever tried using a butter knife to pry apart a tea cake, you know the sadness I’m talking about. This tool fixes all of that instantly. What surprised me is how useful it is outside of tea too. I used it once to chip a bit of ice for a drink, bartender style, and it did great. It also looks nice displayed with other tea accessories thanks to the mix of stainless steel and the pretty wooden handle. If you enjoy pu’er, tea bricks, or any kind of compressed tea, this is an absolute must have. Durable, comfortable, sharp, and genuinely satisfying to use. A simple tool that ends up feeling like a little treasure.
