Ideal for daily knife maintenance and safety

If you cook & prepare your meals daily, especially working with meats and vegetables like I do, then you already know how important it is to have knives that are sharp, safe, and ready for the job. The Kintif 12-inch Heavy-Duty Honing Steel is exactly the kind of tool that keeps your blades performing at their best between full sharpenings. The first thing you’ll notice is its exceptional build and weight. At over a pound, this isn’t a flimsy rod—it’s solid, heavy-duty, and built to last. The flattened oval design gives you more surface area and better control than the typical round rods that come with knife sets, which means fewer strokes and a faster, sharper edge. I was impressed at how quickly it restored my chef’s knife to a razor-like finish.Likewise, the high-carbon steel construction (rated 63–65 HRC) and fine-cut grooves provide just the right texture for honing without taking off unnecessary metal. It’s also versatile—works equally well on chef knives, butcher knives, santoku, and even boning knives. The handle is sturdy with a slip-resistant base, and the metal hanging ring is a nice touch for storage.Yes, it is heavy, but that heft actually provides stability and makes honing smoother and safer. Like other reviewers have said, once you get the rhythm down (a quick video tutorial helps), this tool becomes indispensable in the kitchen. For the price, you’re getting a professional-grade honing steelthat can easily outclass what most knife sets include. Highly recommended for home cooks and professionals alike.

It does work, but... No instructions included, very heavy, and why is it oily?

This honing steel does technically work, and it does work well to make your knives sharp. I don't really think it's a good value though, especially at the current price of almost $60.I'll discuss the positives first. It's very well-made overall, with a large, heavy steel construction, a real wood handle, and overall absurdly sturdy construction. It's huge, and also very heavy, and easily the largest sharpening rod I've ever held in my life. The lines on it are all very straight, and it seems to do a good job sharpening your knives, as long as you follow proper sharpening procedures. It comes in a little box and also has what seems to be a protective plastic sheathe over the 'blade' of it, so you'll have to make sure you remove that before using it. It's pretty easy to hold, as well, comfortable in your hand, though you may struggle to hold it up for very long with how heavy it is.If this had come with some instruction or even a couple diagrams, it would have easily been a 5 star product, even with the oil issue. Unfortunately there's nothing, so you're just going to have to look up tutorials and videos to see how to use it yourself. There's also no reason I can find that this is sent oily; it's not dripping oil, but you can see it inside the plastic sheath and if you run your fingers over it, they'll be oily. I assume it's some kind of anti-corrosion measure to avoid rust in storage, but it's still very strange.* I only review things that I personally use myself and keep using often.* I always give my full, honest, unbiased and unfiltered opinion on everything I review.* I will not hold back or avoid describing any issues I have with a product.* I write exactly what I think about things - the good, the bad, and everything in between.* If I get multiple of something it's because I regularly use and need both of them.* And, I will update my review if something breaks, stops working as intended, or otherwise doesn't hold up as expected.

King of Hones

This giant hone is awesome! It's super easy to use with the contour and the huge amount of surface area. It does actually sharpen a bit, and not just hone. It's a gentle enough grit that I don't worry too much about material removal, but if you scrub a knife on it, you can actually take out some tiny dings without too much work. The build quality leaves nothing to be desired, and since it's so massive, I'm sure it'll last a good while.

Pretty heavy for a honing steel

This is a heavy-duty honing steel and not necessarily for everyday household use. This would be great for a chef or for a professional who actually uses and sharpens their knives every time they use them daily. I have lots of new kitchen knives and they are very nice. I wanted to learn how to sharpen them properly and keep them sharp. I actually took a knife sharpening class and for two hours we sharpened one knife so, very complete instructions. We however did not use a honing steel. A honing steel is something that you should use every time you use your knife so that you don't have to sharpen them with whetting stones.I watched a couple of videos to learn how to use a honing steel properly. There is a trick to it if you have never used one. Holding your knife at the right angle of the sharp edge of the blade or knowing what that angle is will help. Hold the blade away from you and at a slight angle and draw it across the top of the honing steel away from you handle to tip. Do that several times (3-4). Then to sharpen the other side of the blade you do the same thing but from the under-side of the honing tool. Hold the knife again with the blade away from you at a slight angle draw the blade pulling from handle to tip to sharpen the other side of the blade again 3-4 times. If you are already somewhat experienced with the process you will have a rhythm sharpening one side then the other. I advise you to find a video before you use it. I watched one I particularly liked by the chef Jamie Oliver. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the weight, because it is very heavy. For most big guys it would be no problem, but at over 1 1/4 lbs. which is pretty heavy to hold for very long, but it is a very nice tool.
