Not Large Enough

I searched for hours for LARGE oven mitts for my twin brother, a big man with big hands, and no one makes LARGE oven mitts for men!!!! What gives!!!! These were slightly better but why don’t they make mitts for the men chefs.

Good Pair of Oven Mitts

These Homewear oven mitts come in multiple colors to go with any kitchen décor. I ordered the green set and it’s a nice light olive green. The Homewear oven mitts are a good size, not too large or too small. They have long cuffs for protecting your forearms. The heat-resistant quilted cotton lining is soft and thick, and it goes all the way to the end of the cuffs. The flexible silicone, which adds an extra layer of heat protection, covers the whole mitt except for the cuffs. The silicone is embossed on both sides with a repeating pattern of the Homewear logo for a non-slip grip. There is a hanging loop tucked out of the way inside the cuff. These mitts are a significant upgrade to my old pair of silicone mitts, which were thin and way too floppy. Now I’m in better control of my pans and casseroles when getting them out of the hot oven. I also like that the Homewear mitts are sold as a set of two, not just one.

Still learning how much to trust these

These replace a pair of fabric mitts that was wearing thin and causing unpleasant surprises.In comparison, I find them a bit clumsy, more difficult to grab onto a dish with these mitts. Maybe I'm not able to get my hands as far up into the tip ends of the mitts, not quite sure.Any mitt will also let the heat through in some amount of time, but the time seems a lot shorter than with the old pair. I need to develop a better sense of how long I can hold something before having to release it.Overall, I think these will be okay, but they haven't seamlessly fallen into my accustomed use pattern from the previous pair.Update Feb 23 2024With greater experience, I think I'm able to better identify my discomfort with these (aside from the fact that I can't get my fingers all the way to the ends).The silicone surface of these gloves is a bit tacky, which is good inasmuch as a hot dish is unlikely to slip free. The downside is that it's also harder to predictably (emphasis!) release a dish and know for sure that your gloved hand was free to move elsewhere. The old gloves with the fabric cover were predictable in grab and release.

Better than our old oven mitts

I’m in the process of ‘refreshing’ a lot of our kitchen utensils, and this includes our old oven mitts which were getting kind of beat up. The product description for these touts one of their features as being made with “top-tier heat-resistant materials”, so I wanted to give these a try. Off the bat I like that they are a couple of inches longer than our old mitts and I like the color better (I ordered a pair in gray which goes better with our kitchen décor). They do seem to protect your hands from heat better than our old mitts (which were just run-of-the-mill 100% cotton) – I tested these after cooking some food in a Le Creuset casserole dish that was baked at 400 degrees. Needless to say, the dish was extremely hot when it came out of the oven – with the silicone mitts I could hold the casserole dish for about 20 seconds before it started to feel uncomfortable on my hands from the transfer of heat (which is more than enough handling time for the dish). With our old mitts I could only hold the dish for about 10 seconds before it got uncomfortable, so I’m liking how these perform.I also gave them the washing test per the label instructions (cold wash and tumble dry on low) – here is where I ran into a problem. After having them in our clothes dryer for about 30 minutes (at a low temperature) I found that the insides of the mitts were still damp. Okay, so I put them back into the dryer for another 15 minutes at a higher temperature and the insides were still not completely dry. This must be due to the silicone material on the outside which I think is preventing the moisture from completely evaporating. So, the solution I found was to pull out the insides of the mitts (which you can do) before throwing them into the dryer – this allowed them to completely dry, which I think will have to be standard procedure when washing and drying them. Cost-wise, these mitts seem to be priced slightly better to about average when compared to similar silicone mitts offered online and at leading home discount stores. But despite the washing issue, I still really like these mitts and consider them an upgrade from the old ones, so I would still recommend them.
