Great Honing Rod thus far

I love this honing rod! I use it in a fast paced abattoir in conjunction with a smooth honing rod and it does a great job as a quick "little bit more" honing. The guard was misaligned just slightly when I received it but as the handle is screwed together, it was easy to put into the correct position. I have small hands and I love the feel and the look of the handle. It is heavier than my old one but I like the weight. I chose this one based on the reviews of others and wanted to get a rod that would last. I will keep an eye on it and see how long the "lasting" will be!

handle comes loose, must be tighten to avoid issues

KINTIF Honing Steel 12 inch Professional Knife Sharpener Honing Rod, Fine Lines, High Carbon:While this is a very nice design and probably fantastic performance in sharpening, the handle becomes loose with use and must be retighten to avoid issues. I have a couple of commercial grade sharpeners and while this one does not claim to be one, it does say it is a professional one. Please be careful as you use it and make sure the handle and all its components are tight enough before use.

Starts to rust easily.

The honing portion of this product works well. I was able to straighten out my most used blades without any issues. The honing portion looks and feels well made. The handle portion feels hollow and slightly uncomfortable. The handle doesn't feel as sharp as it looks but it does feel hollow and seems to be constructed from low-quality plastic. The blade guard is small and doesn't offer much protection if you make a mistake. The blade guard started rusting after the first rinse off. I didn't dry it right away, but I didn't let it sit for longer than 30 minutes with water on it. High carbon steel will rust easily. The problem is that it wasn't the hardened high carbon steel (Honing portion.) that started to rust. That still looks like new. It was the guard. My conclusion is that half of this product is good, and the handle portion is just not good at all. If you don't care about the handle portion, this will do the job this tool was meant to do.

An Extremely Important Tool in Any Kitchen – and This is an Excellent One

A honing steel is a necessary tool to have in your kitchen if you want to keep your knives sharp and safe (a dull knife is dangerous!). I had a steel from my paternal grandmother’s home, but somehow, when my son expressed an interest in having it, it ended up at his house! So, when I saw this flat (sort of) steel from KINTIF and sold by Qiantang, I ordered it.I ordered the 12 inch (excluding handle) version. It’s designed in a way that I’ve never seen before. In the past, all the steels I’ve used were in the shape of a round cylinder pointed at the end. This steel’s cross section is thick in the middle rounding down to a thin edge with a point at the end. I think that’s good design because it allows effective work without caring about the individual variations on how the steel is used. I’ve found it very easy to use. There are a number of tutorials on how to use a steel online. Some tell you to do it one way and others tell you how to do it in an entirely different way. Pick a way and use it! For example, I was taught to draw the knife towards you. Others will teach you to push it away, some even directing you to put the point of the steel on a cutting board. Find whichever way is easiest for you.There are two magnetic areas on this steel: the tip and the guard near the handle. These are designed to catch any particles of metal that come off the knife you’re steeling. I don’t see this feature as particularly necessary, but it’s there for you.The handle of this steel is interesting. It’s made from a hard, multi-planed material that makes it easy to hold. You can grip it around the handle, use one of the planes as a thumb rest or whatever. It’s different from what I’m used to. That doesn’t make it bad, just different and I’m getting used to it.Finally, the steel has an steel ring on the end of it so you can hang it up somewhere you can easily access it. It does you very little good if you don’t use it, and by using it I mean every time you put it away or get ready to use it (either is fine).I have no difficulty in recommending this to you and giving it a 5-star rating. You’ll find it indispensable once you start using it!
