Serious sharpening
This rod should not be confused with a traditional steel for it will actually eat the edge & sharpen. User should evaluate carefully how each type of metal edge reacts to it & adapt its use accordingly. In the end, you'll be able to sharpen anything.

Beautifully made enormous sharpening steel.
This is a whopper of a sharpening steel. There is a beautifully turned wooden handle, well finished, with a big chrome hanging ring. The “blade” is also well finished with its surface in a very fine pattern for sharpening. Unlike most steels that are round, this one is more blade like in shape, though quite thick. The end is curved allowing it to be placed on a surface without damage. The length gives me an inferiority complex. Combined with the unusual shape it will not fit into any knife block I own so will have to find residence either in a drawer or hanging on the wall, hopefully in a place of honor with a small spotlight. I weighed this on my kitchen scale and it tops out at just over 1 lb 6 oz. Hefty to be sure. Unlike a knife that tapers, there is so much length to it that the balance point is well away from the handle. It feels more like using a broad sword. In use, this would be best used as the stationary element, drawing your knives down to do the sharpening. It is just too big to use any other way.If you have a place to hang it on display in your kitchen and want to put on a big show of knife sharpening then this is the tool you want. For regular daily use in a home kitchen, perhaps this is overkill.

Outstanding!
Ever since I worked in a butcher shop as a small kid, I always wanted a professional Sharpening steel. I have several of the round types that come with the set of knives in a block, but none quite like this. I was so excited when it got here that I gathered up a few of my semi-sharp knives and did a paper-cut test. none of them passed. I spend about a minute on each blade, holding a consistent 20% angle opposed the the sharpener, both on the forward and return stroke. Probably made 15-20 passes per side on each knife. Well, now I can make confetti at will. the blades polished and sharpened so quickly, I was blown away. I thought I would have to run them through my machine powered sharpener just to get an edge and THEN follow up with this...nope...I just ran with it and it put a beautiful edge on them in seconds. It would be a little better of the handle wasn't so rounded..it would give a better indexing of the sharpener than a round handle.

Heavy with a small handle and narrow finger guard
This sharpener is beautiful when you open the box. But that's pretty much where the fun ends because then you pick it up and it is seriously heavy, and you get hand fatigue when using it. This is also in part because of the tiny handle that can't fully fit an adult hand. Also, the finger guard is very small and when using it I kept thinking the blade would slide off and cut me. And lastly, there's a reason all honing rods are round so that you can slide the blade up on one side and down on the other in very fast succession. Not this one because you must carefully place the blade at the right angle to get the correct hone.
