Easy to use and convenient to store. Leaves smooth edges. I do wish it would stop automatically after making a full round of the can. The speed is like any electric can opener. Thinking I’ll order one for my parents for the ease of use and its small size.
I love this can opener! My old electric can opener had broken and wasn’t doing a good job anyway, and my hand is not really strong enough to use a manual can opener, so I was eager to try something new. This can opener is awesome. Unlike the old Electric one or the manual type, it does not cut down on the inside of the top of the can. Instead, it cuts around the outer rim of the can so you don’t have any sharp edges to lift away. And you actually do simply set it in place, push the button, and step away to let the can opener whiz around the top of the can all by itself! It does a perfect job and comes to a stop when it’s finished. I have now bought this as a gift for several other people and they are likewise amazed at how easy it is. This is a really really good can opener.
Kitchen Mama Auto 2.0 Electric Can Opener.I, too, noted the previous 1 & 2 star reviews questioning this opener. Still the surprising number of positive reviews from numerous kitchen store sources AND the CR recommendation were enough for me to give this a try. Wow ... boo! All these sources really need to revisit their tests and reviews.Complete Fail! We tried it twice and it never worked properly. First time, my wife simply gave up on it and went back to our old OXO. 2nd time I tried and it locked on and did it's thing. It did cut the lid after 2 revolutions, BUT IT NEVER LET GO!! I mean, it latched on sooo tightly that NOTHING was prying that thing off. No amount of starting, stopping, lifting, tapping, kind words or not-so-kind words was going to get that thing to let go! Finally got it to come off through brute force, demolishing the can and cutting myself. I am absolutely dead serious about how tightly this thing was gripping the can. I was only 1 step away from getting the tin snips. When I say brute force I mean I really had to crank on it - I tore and bent the can metal in the process! Even after I got the thing loose it never snapped back to it's open position. FWIW, the can started out being in good condition, free from any visible dents or abnormalities.The biggest reason for my 1 star review is in the design flaw. Surprisingly, there is NO manual release! Every can opener I've used - manual or electric - have always had some mechanism for releasing the device manually. It happens with the best of these things - some odd little snag or dent in the can and it just hangs on a bit more than normal. Had I been able to release this opener manually I could have reseated it and tried again. Did I get a defective unit? Doubtful. Even if it was defective, that is a pretty big problem in design and quality control that I wouldn't want to take a 2nd chance with.
My story:I've been using a manual can opener my whole life without issue. Although, I rarely needed to open more than a few cans a month. Last year, I got a new roommate. He prefers to use litter in the bathroom, and he likes to have canned food with his crunchies. So, I am now opening 2 cans a day. About 5 or 6 months ago my wrists started bothering me. They would ache throughout the day, especially if I had to firmly grab something, and opening cans was becoming a nightmare. I didn't realize at the time, but it was having to use the manual can opener twice a day that was causing me pain throughout the whole day. I really like the safety style can openers, and will use them even if the can has a score line for easy opening. Trying to recycle razor sharp cans that need to be degreased always ends in blood. Unfortunately, a lot of times, that score line prevents me from being able to use a safety opener. The angled blade of the Kitchen Mama 2.0 solved that problem, and I can now open all cans without leaving a sharp edge. I haven't tried any square cans yet, as I haven't had any cravings for spam, anchovies, or sardinesImportant Info:1-When you start the Kitchen Mama 2.0, it grabs the lip of the can and begins working around. If you hold the Kitchen Mama 2.0 in your hand, it will hold the can as it opens it, but the lid will get stuck on the can. It's important to let the Kitchen Mama 2.0 open the can by itself. The weight at the back of the Kitchen Mama 2.0 provides leverage to bend the cans lip away from the can as it's being opened, making it much easier to remove the lid2-It does not have an auto off. Once the Kitchen Mama 2.0 has made a full circle, the tone of the motor changes and the lid begins rotating on top of the can, instead of the Kitchen Mama 2.0. That's when you press the button a second time to switch it off3-If you want to use rechargeable AA batteries, make sure you get the 1.5 volt lithium rechargeable batteries. The NiMH rechargeable batteries only provide 1.2 volts of nominal power, which will not be enough to overcome the torque required to cut metal. Also, NiMH AA batteries are slightly wider than alkaline AA batteries, so they may not fit without excessive force4-I dropped it once, from the height of my top drawer under the counter. The body popped open a little bit, but nothing broke, and it snapped back together without issue.5-I'm on my second set of alkaline AA batteries since May 4th. I've been opening at least 2 small cans per day for my furry roommate, and a few more larger cans per month for myself. Some quick head maths says I opened around 130 small cans plus 7 large cans on the first set of 4 alkaline AA batteries. The small cans are 2.5 inches in diameter, so maths says the Kitchen Mama 2.0 cut over 85 feet of can lid on one set of alkaline batteries. If I keep using it at the same rate, I'll be averaging 1 alkaline battery per month. I've been considering purchasing rechargeable 1.5 volt lithium batteries, but they cost twice as much as a 2 year supply of alkaline batteries. So, if I keep listening to maths, the alkaline batteries are cheaperI wish I didn't have to say "Kitchen Mama 2.0" every time, but I don't trust this particular algorithm anymore. This way my 5 star review can't be mistaken for another productEdit:Finally had that craving for spam, and it works great on square cans too. It's actually kind of fun to watch...Final Edit:DON'T OPEN SQUARE CANS!!!I think the way it climbed around the sharp corners caused something to bend out of alignment, because after opening a second square can, it no longer moves around the can kid. It just digs low on the rim and sits in one place, chewing a small hole in the side of the can
It's a reliable item. Didn't come with any instructions or information but not hard to figure out so there is a very low learning curve. I do like the fact that it doesn't leave you with any sharp edges & it takes up very little space either on top of the counter or in a drawer. Only real drawback is it doesn't stop when it's done. You have to pay attention where it started & stop it manually when you think it's gone all around. But in times of power outages I can still open my canned goods & that makes it all worthwhile
