The bowl was perfect for my trifle. It is very nice.
This 8.9 inch diameter Mowhut Sealed Trifle Bowl has a lid that is sealed with four clips and features a date dial on the lid. It also includes what looks like a removable steam tray on the bottom--which is very strange, as this type of plastic cannot be microwaved. This bowl is meant strictly for preparing and serving cold foods like salad, trifle, tiramisu, or cold puddings. Think of it as mix and serve Tupperware for chilled dishes.Importantly, although the plastic used in this bowl is BPA free, it still cannot be heated. Heating it will cause the plastic to become cloudy and break down over time. So it cannot be microwaved or washed in the dishwasher. (And of course, it cannot be heated in the oven!). It is made of #1 PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate), which is generally used for single use plastics and is not microwavable. Although it does not contain BPA, it may contain other harmful chemicals that may leach into food when heated. It seems very strange that this completely non-microwavable bowl includes what looks like a removable steam tray in the bottom. Usually, such trays are used in microwavable bowls for steaming food. You put a little water into the bowl, which sits under the tray, and turns to steam in the microwave to heat the food sitting on top. Of what use is this tray for completely cold foods? Foods like trifle, tiramisu, ice cream, or pudding will completely fill the bottom. The tray will just get in the way. The only use I can imagine would be if you set some kind of cold, solid, drippy food like a dense molded pudding on it and let the excess moisture or sauce collect under the tray. But how many foods like that are there? The uber-cool date dial on the lid allows you to select the month and date that you prepared the food, so that you will always know how old it is and eat it or throw it away on time. How very smart! I wish all food storage bowls had this feature! The four clips in the four quadrants of the bowl seal it well enough for most purposes. But the bowl is not vacuum sealed or air tight. If you turn it upside down (yes, I tried this!), it will drip. Air will get into your food to disflavor it (a word I just now made up!) or spoil it that much faster.Glass trifle bowls with lids (believe it or not, there are many on the market!) can be had for $22.50 to $42 (acacia wood lid). Most cost around $28-$35. This is the only plastic trifle bowl I was able to find. For very good reason! Glass is microwavable and dishwasher safe. (Although most of them seem to have wooden lids, and you have to wash those by hand. And the wooden lids only sit on top of the bowl—they do not seem to be clamped down or sealed in any way.). Glass is also completely inert, so it does not shed chemicals like some plastics. This plastic trifle bowl costs the same as the cheapest glass one. But it is much less versatile, much less safe, and much less durable.I would give this bowl 3 stars, as it cannot be heated, is potentially unsafe, is not tightly sealed, and is of very limited use. However, it gets an extra star for that amazing date dial on the lid! Do yourself a favor—if you want a trifle bowl with a lid, spend a few more bucks and buy a glass one! If you want Tupperware, get the kind that is made out of #5 PP (Polypropylene), which can be safely microwaved and washed in the dishwasher and will not shed chemicals into your food! This bowl—even with the fancy dancy uber-cool date dial on the lid!—is only good for foods that are mixed, served, and stored completely cold. It is not well sealed. And it must be washed by hand. You can find much more convenient, versatile, safe, and durable items for the same price or just a little bit more.
This 9 inch salad or serving bowl for desserts or snack snacks could be used for only that. It's not really microwave or freezer safe so it's not useful for any of these purposes. You can't put it in the dishwasher either so it makes hand cleaning tedious.I think it's very expensive at $21 and not really worth that price for one piece. The lid isn't that easy to secure to the bowl which is also not convenient. If I were to order this again I would be a buyer at around $9 if it worked perfectly.Disappointed with this bowl.
