Cheap, accurate enough espresso scale

This isn't a perfect espresso scale. As mentioned elsewhere, the scale seems to cut some corners when it comes to displaying weights and "rounds up" a little bit. It's rare to get a result of 17.9g, for example — it tends to display something like 17.6g for a few fractions of a gram before incrementing up to 18.0 or 18.1g. However, it doesn't advertise or pretend that it's the most precise instrument, so I don't find this to be a big deal. Likewise, there is a tiny bit of a delay to refreshing the measured weight in real time, but this is barely noticeable. At this price point, I think these shortcomings are reasonable and forgivable. It has all the features I need to brew shots of espresso. There is a start/stop timer, a tare function, a silicone tray to protect the weighing surface from liquid spray, a tray/cover on which to spread out coffee beans as you're weighing them out, and an easily legible LCD screen with large numbers. It fits on the drip tray of my Breville espresso machine without sticking out. It is so much cheaper than some of the gold standard scales that have been recommended by espresso reviewers and sites. Unless you need the best of the best scale or maybe are in the commercial realm as a coffeeshop/barista, I imagine this will serve most people's needs. Would buy again.

Excellent scale - worthy of a review.

I rarely leave reviews, but this scale deserves one. First, it is very accurate. I compared it with a 500g scale that measures 1/100th of a gram and this scale matched the accuracy of that one. Second, I really like the tactile timer button, because my last scale's timer button was touch screen and would often not sense my first press, which resulted in incorrect times. Finally, this scale is very compact yet large enough to do everything I want it to - which is weigh espresso shots and my portafilter.

Easy to set up for consistent coffee flavor.

Very easy to set up and use. Zeroes out easily when using different grinders for my beans. Allows a precise measurement of the coffee before you do the grinding. Allows consistent brew flavor from your favorite coffee (both beans and pre-ground).

Basically unbeatable at price point & beyond

Awesome little scale, the portafiltro etching looks good on my espresso bar but that's besides the point. I tried several scales all had some good qualities but this one took the cake. Feels not cheap, soft touch coating helps. The little silicone pad is useful when pulling shots directly on the machine as it is NOT IP rated. The timer function sets it apart from the near priced competition. Only cons (not really due to price) are that the timer does not pause, stop and reset are all you can do. Wish it was a little thinner but it works fine on my gaggia. Pro's: I use it with a Timemore ESP (yeah not many have this one but it's fantastic) to weigh dose & it gives me an accurate to the first decimal gram everytime! (That's a tenth) reads fast enough to pull shots accurately. VERY easy to read and use, big bright numbers. Also, you can start with dosing cup from grinder on scale before turning on which will auto tare. I usually save that for the demitasse cups as I've learned mine are not equally weighted. I waited to review only after pulling 2 doubles a day for over a month. Yeah it's good and I hope this helps someone save some bucks if you don't need smart scale features and apps or have the need to dose into & weigh portafiltro (works but clumsy so bigger might be better). Helped me dial in when combined with my tests comparing 1zxpresso, C2 , and the new ESP. I'd say it's a steal at this price and I can save some dough for other stuff like accupuncture needles to make wdt which is more rewarding than buying one 🙂

Glad I Went With This Scale

I am using this scale with a Breville Barista Express to both weigh my beans and to weigh/time the espresso shot being pulled.THE SHORT: In my opinion, the only reason you should buy a more expensive scale is for aesthetic reasons or if you need more than 0.1 grams of precision (you probably don't).THE LONG: I watched a lot of YouTube videos before purchasing this scale, on others in the price range as well as those far more expensive. This scale is simple to use, accurate, and sufficiently precise for the home barista, it's a great value and I would recommend this before anything else. The green you see in the product page is a thin, silicone pad that is meant to make the surface less "slippery". I have not found that I needed it and I place my whole portafilter on this to weigh my beans before grinding. So I just threw it in my junk drawer, it's great for stuck jar lids. Additionally, the cover is really not needed for my purposes and gets in the way when trying to weigh/time the shot being pulled. So I just opened the cover halfway (90 degrees) and popped it off.Since the buttons are a part of the chassis, they're de-coupled from the scale function. This is great because you won't disturb the scale when you start the timer with your shot. The timer is great, really appreciate the simplicity. You press the clock button to start it, press it again to stop, and press it a third time if you need to reset/zero it.It's not waterproof, but I've not had any issue having accidentally spilled some espresso on the buttons.I'm not sure if I can really even complain about this, but the scale has difficulty weighing very light objects, meaning it struggles with weighing beans in something like a lighttight paper cup. But I now weigh my beans in the portafilter and then dump them into the grinder so it's not an issue. If there were one thing I would improve, I suppose it would be the speed. It's not really an issue until that last few tenths of grams as I approach my grind weight. I might be at 17.6 grams trying to get to 18 and I add a bean and it doesn't register the weight of the bean for 2-4 seconds. But if I add three beans, it will instantly register the increase in weight.Overall, this is just a great value and I highly recommend this scale.
