Ingenious dynamo-powered no batteries needed food thermometer not just for Preppers
This is an ingenious food thermometer, which does not require batteries to operate. Instead, it uses an internal dynamo, which powers itself simply by pulling the food probe open and closed.It’s kind of cool because you can hear a set of fine gears running inside when you open and shut the probe. If you’ve ever had one of those hand crank operated emergency radios, you get the idea.So not needing to use a battery makes this food thermometer highly versatile, and it fits in a number of categories.Certainly if you are a Prepper this is a great thermometer to have packed and stored away for emergency use.But I find this thermometer extremely handy and functional just to use for every day cooking and grilling.Admittedly the batteries usually last quite a long time in the typical battery-operated food thermometer. But if you’ve ever had a battery fail in the middle of cooking or grilling something, it can be quite annoying and inconvenient.So, with this thermometer, I have complete confidence that it will be always ready to provide me with a temperature reading whether I have been using it daily, or have left it sitting unused for weeks or months in a kitchen drawer or with the grill.The LCD display on the thermometer is large and easy to read. The display comes on the instant you open the food probe. I find it it registers the temperature of items I am testing almost instantly, and certainly faster than some other food thermometers I have used.Also, I find this dynamo food thermometer to be sufficiently accurate for cooking, with its temperature readings matching the readings I get from other trusted thermometers.The thermometer is light in weight, but feels durable and well-made. It has buttons to set it to Fahrenheit or centigrade, and hold the currently displayed temperature. It has a handy magnet on the back which can hold it firmly to a ferrous metal surface.At its current cost of about $35, I do not consider it pricey at all. I think it is a good value for what you were getting which is a food thermometer which will always be ready to use, which may last indefinitely, and will never need a battery.

Handy. No batteries required is a game changer. I never seem to have the right battery when I need it. Turns on/off with just opening or closing. Accidentally left it outside in the rain for a few hours and the screen still is clear without fogging or water. Hope that means this thermometer will be durable and long lasting. Temperature accuracy is touch and go. I tested it against the internal thermometer on my indoor grill/air fryer and there was always a 2-4 degree difference. I also tested it against a turkey thermometer and had the same result. Would not recommend if you need precise temperature control but for grilling which is what we have used it for it has been fine. Faster in displaying the temp making me wonder if too fast for accuarate measurement and why there are temperature reading variations. Besides not requiring batteries this thermometer does not seem to be any better than cheaper options.

Solution to Thermometer damages from Leaking Batteries
Having lived in the Midwest, I am familiar with the crank operated dynamo powered radio for emergency broadcasts - not having to worry about utility power outage or dead batteries. I usually keep a battery powered meat thermometer with the other BBQ tools out in the patio. Unfortunately, I have lost at least 2 of these thermometers because of leaking batteries. This dynamo powered thermometer is the ideal solution to the battery problems.Its easy to use: rotate open the probe and the display turns on. Repeat the close-open cycle if more time is needed to take the temperature measurement. The display is a good size - easy to read the temperature reading. The temperature is fairly accurate - I have compared it against another digital thermometer and they were within 1 degree of each other.My only negative comment : the 2 push-buttons are harder to push down to actuate. However, I don't need to swap frequently between Deg-F & Deg-C, so this is not a big deal for me.
