My second Meion portafilter and just as good

I picked up this MEION 54mm bottomless portafilter for my Breville, and it fit without any problems even though the Infuser wasn’t listed in the title. It locks in smoothly, no grinding noises or scratching, just the normal bit of resistance you’d expect when twisting a portafilter into place. Unlocking is just as smooth. The handle is shaped very much like another MEION portafilter I own, except that one is all silver with a matte metallic finish. This one uses wood, with a mid-to-dark color tone and some yellow mixed into the grain. The finish is smooth and well done. The handle has a carved contour where the middle is a little thinner than either end, which creates raised edges along the grip. It’s not uncomfortable, but I’ve never really been a fan of it. I noticed the same thing on my other MEION portafilter, and I’m conscious of it every time I use it, so I’ll probably be aware of it with this one too. Still, the handle is long enough and gives good leverage when locking it in.On the scale this portafilter weighed about 335.5 grams. Length from the base to the end of the handle measures 15.5 centimeters (about 6.1 inches). The basket has a depth of 24 millimeters. At the top it measures 54 millimeters across on the outside, tapering slightly toward the bottom to about 51 millimeters. The rim is neatly tucked in, so it fits cleanly into the group head without interference. The basket sits snug in the holder, though not overly tight. It’s secure enough that it doesn’t pop out when I knock the puck, but it pulls out easily enough for cleaning. I’ll keep an eye on it since it may loosen a bit with use, but for now it feels fine. The included basket looks good, though I haven’t tested it enough to say how much dialing in it’ll need. If it gives me trouble, I’ll just swap in one of my other baskets that I know well. This one came with a puck screen, which is always a nice extra. It’s one of the thinner types, so it doesn’t get in the way of locking in the portafilter. At $45.99 I think it’s a fair value. It’s a little higher than some other portafilters I’ve seen, but it comes with a puck screen, and those alone usually run anywhere from $8 to $15 depending on where you buy them. Taking that into account, the price makes sense.

NIce quality bottomless portafilter that works great with my Brevilla Barista Express

Okay, so I've been hearing for a while that if you want to up your game with the Breville Barista Express, one of the first things you need to do is get a bottomless portafilter. Supposedly the bottomless portafilter allows better results due to being able to see your extraction, and possibly diagnose some issues such an nonuniform distribution of espresso during extraction, getting the right amount of crema, etc. Also due to having less mass/and less material in contact with the espresso, the espresso maintains more heat and again you get more consistent results. So I went ahead and tried it out. First of all, this is a lovely portafilter -- definitely an upgrade in appearance from the supplied one that came with my Barista Express machine. The wood handle has a nice finish to it and appears that it will hold up well long term. The sculpted handle is nicer to grip, and the chrome is even and nice. This portafilter is lighter weight than the original portafilter. The included extraction cup/filter is sized for a double shot of espresso, but your original screens can fit in this as well if you need a smaller shot. The supplied screen/cup fits a little less firmly than the ones do in the original portafilter, which I like - it's much easier to remove for cleaning, etc.And the results: I definitely noticed that my espresso was a little warmer than usual after following the same preparation methods as usual. Other than that, I haven't yet noticed any difference in the quality of my drinks, but I do have confirmation that my preparation methods are pretty good because I'm now able to watch the extraction and verify that I'm getting uniform extraction and nice crema. This portafilter is definitely easier to clean up afterwards, and between that and the prettier appearance is all the benefit I need.My Breville tamper fits well -- maybe even a touch better than with their own portafilter. Packaging is nice with this is coming in a nice box and inside laser-cut foam, so this presents well as a gift, if desired.

Pretty but not functional

I was hoping this would work seamlessly like the original Breville portafilter, but it does not. The filter basket that comes with this doesn’t fit securely. When you go to knock your puck out the filter basket comes out too. I remedied this by using the Breville filter instead and that worked well. The puck screen works well too. I had gotten some other screens that were just way too thick. This filter seems to work very well. Lastly, and maybe this is to be expected, but when the espresso is brewing instead of dripping down it splatters. I’ve never once had espresso on the back splash of my machine after pulling shots, much less on the front of the drip pan, but I didn’t with this portafilter. I’ll admit it could be something I’ve not done right with the espresso pull, but I haven’t figured that out yet.All that being said, it’s a beautiful piece and seems to be well made, durability wise.
