Large size, great with ice, good for more than whiskey

I love whiskey and was looking forward to trying these oak glasses. They came in an attractive, reusable cardboard container shown in the product images and in my photos here. The container is not as durable as, say, a Scotch tube, but it blends well enough in the cupboard.My first impression of the glasses was mild disappointment in the finish. (If you want the pros, skip to the bottom.) On close examination, they do appear to be charred on the inside as expected. But because of the varnish over the entire surface, I thought at first that the interior may have been painted. And the appeal of drinking from charred oak glasses was diminished by the sheen and smell of the shiny coat. They may have to finish them like that to be food-safe, I'm not sure. But my thought before ordering them was that they resembled the barrels in which bourbon and other whiskeys are aged.After washing them with soap and warm water I first I poured two glasses neat: a decent bourbon and my favorite Scotch. The glasses felt large to me. I'm used to drinking from the classic glass tumblers (see my second photo for side-by-side comparison) and though the diameter of the mouth was about the same, the bulge and roundness of the middle made the oak glasses feel substantially wider in my hand. I do have smallish hands, but the heavier traditional crystal tumblers are easier to hold, IMO.What I liked:The larger interior of the oak glasses did seem to benefit the introduction of the whiskey and the nose was pleasant. It had this effect with both drinks, the aroma was slightly enhanced. Though I'll say the effect was somewhat spoiled by the persistent smell of the varnish, which I believe will diminish over time with drinking and washing.After finishing the room-temp test, I added ice and tried the bourbon and Scotch again, and I think I found my preferred use for these tumblers. Being wood, they insulate fairly well. I felt no coldness or condensation from the cubes. Inversely, the heat of my hand did not seem to melt the ice nearly as fast as it would in a crystal tumbler. I was able to enjoy the whiskey longer without need to drink it as fast. I do like some melt, which opens up the drinks, especially the Scotch, but too much and it ruins the taste. These glasses held the cool beverages at optimum temp (for me) for longer and with nicer dilution than my traditional go-to glasses.Final impression: I did make room in my whiskey cupboard for these oak tumblers. They are attractive and I think the new smell will go away quickly with use. The benefit they offer in serving on-ice drinks, as well as the enhanced aroma, are genuinely nice.Also noted by my wife is that they would be really fun to serve drinks like daiquiris. They have a rustic sophistication, and paired with the ability to keep cold drinks from melting longer, they'd be a natural for icy tropical beverages.

Great gift for anyone who enjoys a good whiskey or scotch

I really love these oak glasses. The cups are beautiful and smooth on the outside. The inside is not smooth and has ridges and divots which I imagine is on purpose (for the flavor imparting). I do wonder how that will hold up over time with multiple cleanings. I have a penchant for knocking over cups so the best feature for me is the ability for the cup to be layed on it's side and have it return to its standing postion right away. The bottom being weighted really helps with the hand feel of the cup. My hands are a bit small so the cup is a bit large for me but my husband said that it was a comfortable experience for him. The price seems fair for a handcrafted item. Overall, I think these cups would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys a good whiskey or scotch.

An attractive gift set that doesn't really alter the taste much.

I have mixed feelings about these glasses. I enjoy scotch very much. I love wood. These cups are very attractive. Of course I needed to do a taste test and found the scotch in the crystal and scotch in the wooden glass tasted the same. Until I got to the last bit which was in the glass longer and had much more contact with the charred wood. That last sip tasted a bit smoother. For me scotch drinking is also an experience. My go to glass has been a heavy crystal glass that fits nicely in my hand. The wood glasses were a bit larger, rather than sitting comfortably in the hand I needed to hold them with my finger tips and a bit more pressure because of the slippery finish. BTW I take an xtra large glove size. In summary, these are nicely packaged, suitable as a gift. They would be fine to use with a group of people sitting around drinking. When by myself I will have a nice solid crystal glass in my hand.

Great addition to the "Dog House"

Yeah, my man cave is called "The Dog House", because being in trouble there is not so bad...Anyway, these made a great addition to that space. It took me about 2 mins to go poor me a shot to try these out after opening the awesome case they come in, which would make a great present to any special guy in your life. As you can see in the pic, I took no time in enjoying these glasses.While I do give these 5 stars, note they are not what I'd call perfect beyond the gift stage. I put a couple ice cubes in my drink and almost immediately had either condensation or leaking from one of these. I'd hope to have seen a coated interior to the vessel, but fear it's pure wood with no sealer. So I'm thinking that leaking will happen. They do say in the description to not leave liquid in them for long periods. I'd seriously take that statement for what's it's worth. Chug, empty, clean. (P.S. the chugging is not an issue, right guys! :)Also, the round box they come in has an American flag and eagle on it, but I really don't think these are USA made. For what that's worth.Anyway, a conversation piece if nothing else. Very cool, very different, very worth it.
