Easy to use onigiri and rice ball molds
This set of onigiri molds and rice ball shaker are easy to use and good quality. They come in a variety of shapes and include a spoon for portioning and a cheapy oil brush.I used the molds to portion out nasi kuning (Indonesian turmeric rice) because I'm out of sticky rice. The nasi kuning worked well in the onigiri molds and in the rice ball shaker, probably because of the coconut milk in the recipe. I had an easy time filling and demolding the onigiri molds and rice ball shaker. I didn't coat them in oil before filling them and they demolded with ease. The rice held its shape well once out of the mold, too.The rice ball shaker is fun to use. I filled one half of the shaker with rice, closed the lid, and shook it back and forth until the balls were formed. They came out pretty much perfect every time and the shaker is fun to use.For the onigiri molds, I spooned in my rice and pressed the top into place. After removing the top, I turned the mold upside down and pressed gently to release the rice. The shapes held very well and slid out of the mold easily. In case anyone is interested, the nasi kuning recipe I used is adjusted from one I found on What to Cook Today. It is as follows:2 cups of jasmine rice2 cups of water1/2 cup of coconut milk (from a can, I used Thai Kitchen)1 tablespoon turmeric3 pieces of dried pandan leaves1 stalk of lemongrass, bruised2 kaffir lime leaves2 bay leaves (I forgot them this time but normally add them)1/2 teaspoon of kosher saltRinse the jasmine rice thoroughly. Soak for 30 mins.Coat rice cooker with a little olive oil or other neutral flavored oil. Put all ingredients in a rice cooker. (I use the Aroma professional.) Give the ingredients a good stir. Turn the rice cooker on to the white rice setting. When the rice cooker finishes cooking, fluff the rice. Spoon into the onigiri press. Press, plate, and serve.Overall I am very happy with these molds and the ball shaker. They are easy to use. They wash well in the dishwasher. The shapes are adorable. The set also comes with a useful little rice spoon and a low quality oil brush. I'm not taking off any stars for a single underwhelming accessory in an otherwise excellent set. I think these molds are lots of fun to use and they're good quality.
