I've seen this type of corn kernel extractor before, and I wondered how efficient it really is, so I decided to try this one out. It may help to watch a youtube video of someone using one, but it's relatively simple enough to figure out through a bit of trial and error. Initially, using a corn fork helps to establish a stable/firm grip on the corn cob, but eventually you may not need it. I experimented with the angle of slicing, and it seems that somewhere between parallel to the cob and 45 degrees away is optimal. Otherwise, you will not cleanly cut the kernels or will start getting stuck in the cob.I suppose the price is reasonable for just the tool, but I think including a simple corn fork would have helped a lot. Also, the tool is a bit on the small side, and it requires multiple passes to get all the kernels off. Making the blade a bit wider would have been more useful. I docked a star for those reasons. Other than that, it works decently well, and it is very easy to clean.
We eat a lot of fresh corn-- especially since we spend winters in Florida where we can get fresh corn as well. I was so excited to get this but so disappointed in how it failed:1. Both the photo and video show a corn fork, but that is not included --it did not state one was included but why show it so prominently pictured? A corn fork might have helped stabilize the corn, but it still wouldn't work as well as a knife.2. It does not consistently remove the kernels-- sometimes it does, often it only does half of them, requiring repeated passes over the same area, while corn flies everywhere despite my having a dish towel under it. It took much longer to use this than it does using a knife.I will continue my much better technique (as recommended by a noted cooking magazine) of using a serrated knife (i.e. bread knife) and putting the corn cob over a kitchen towel which prevents the kernels from bouncing all over. I have much more control over the knife and can remove the corn kernels as deep as desired, and in much less time.I do not recommend this product.
I love it because works very well, it is easy to use and has an incredible Quality to cut, a perfect design and material.
Edit: I think Amazon won't let me post the pic of the cut, so I'm removing it and trying again.Original review: I thought this corn peeler would be a quicker, safer option for taking corn off the cob but it's a fail for me.First, I needed to review the listing pictures to get the best idea how to use it, so better instructions is always a good idea. It's winter here, so no fresh corn on the cob is available. Therefore, we tried it with frozen corn on the cob. While holding the peeler like the listing pics show, we first tried to cut the corn off the frozen cob. Nope. So we defrosted the corn in the microwave and tried again. Disaster!Again, holding it as instructed, it slipped and you can see the resulting cut in my pics here. (Edit: removed the pic)But we didn't give up and did cut all the corn off the cob, but the peeler isn't sharp enough to cut cleanly (ironic bc it was sharp enough to cut human flesh). Instead, it kind of smashed the corn off the cob, resulting in corn the texture of creamed corn.Oh my goodness. It's just so much easier to stick a fork in the top of the cob and use a sharp knife to cut off all the corn ribs.
Those who know me know how much I love corn. I mean GOOD corn. Sweet, crisp, & fresh. I add kernels to salads, pasta salads, and occasionally make sweet corn tamales. Stripping corn cobs is time consuming.Thought this might save time so here i am.I like that it is stainless steel and the handle grip is brushed stainless with a long enough rod to keep me from having any mishaps. The blade is sharp enough, happy that there was a cardboard slip cover on it to prevent injury in unboxing. But it is not razor sharp which is good since you don't want to gouge the cob.One would think that this is a pretty straightforward item to use and it did not come with any instructions or usage tips so my first use was interesting. I got from the photos that you want to go in at an angle but it was difficult to figure out how much of an angle. Too little and you skim or even miss kernels and too much and you get hung up on the cob. So there is a bit of a learning curve...of course that is true with any kitchen gadget. But once I got a good angle on one of the passes, it was pretty cool and quite satisfying. It's not yet corn season but here is the southland, we occasionally get good corn even in winter - like what I tested this on.I do highly recommend using a corn fork/corn holder though...to protect your fingers & hand...or at least until you get proficient at using this...or in my case, always use a corn fork. I would also suggest doing this on a cutting board your first few times...as you'll be able to see from the video, i used a bowl and struggled a tad with it. I think had i used the cutting board, it may have been a little smoother of a test run...but you can see in one of my pics that i was able to get all the kernels...not perfectly, but hey...it was my first use...next time will be easier i'm sure.It does say you can put it in the dishwasher but personally, i like to hand wash & dry and the simple design makes it easy to do so.
