cute and comfortable rugs
These rugs are super cute and they are softer than I expected. They aren't so soft that they are easily damaged, but they definitely make standing in the kitchen a lot more comfortable. They are easy to wash, but they get heavy since they hold a lot of water. I found it better to do an extra spin cycle and hang dry them. The color is appropriate for any area of my house, since it is a fairly neutral color palette. The chickens are cute, and they have received many compliments. They don't slide around all over the place, either.

Chicken’s NOT Roosters
I’ve long collected large ceramic and metal Roosters for my kitchens, whether they are our borderline-commercial-type kitchens at our entertaining homes or small country kitchens more suited to small groups and small meals or the galley style kitchen of the motorhome, it’s hard to miss the roosters. Until I ran across the NESPHY “Rooster Kitchen Rugs”, I’d never ordered anything with a chicken theme.First, let me clarify my thoughts on the graphics. These birds look like chickens to me, not roosters, and there is most certainly a difference. You may disagree with me and that’s okay. It’s just that back in my 4-H days (I grew up in the swamp and I really enjoyed our 4-H club in school), roosters looked nothing like the graphics on these rugs. One of my show chickens could have been the model chicken for two of the birds in the graphics,Before you ask, I raised and showed chickens. My favorite chicken won pretty much every year that I showed her (she lived a happy and pampered life until her natural expiration at age 16 - that’s a good run for a chicken I’m told) and the fowl depicted on this set of three rugs look like chickens, not roosters, to me.Be that as it may, I ordered this three rug set for our mountain home because I needed some kitchen rugs and I thought the chickens might be a fun addition. The house has hardwood floors and the rugs non-skip backing make them ideal for the floor.When I rolled out the first two rugs I was a little disappointed at the construction weight. These are not thick, luxurious rugs like you may find in a bathroom, nor were they the heavy weight, industrial-strength, thick rubber-backed commercial ones like the one I have on our porch, these are thin, relatively lightweight artificial fiber rugs with a printed chicken theme that doesn’t seem to hold up to wear. Just unfolding the rugs reveals deficiencies in the ink adherence along the creases that run through the printed graphics. Worse, it takes little effort in cleaning to remove the printed graphic pigment altogether.The rugs are made of “faux cashmere”, something about which I know nothing. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of “faux cashmere” until I ordered this set of rugs. I have cashmere sweaters in the closet and the rugs aren’t in the same ballpark as real cashmere, not even close. The rugs are characterized as “medium pile” and that’s a subjective term, but I think the rubber-backed commercial carpet in the office has more cushion and is more durable than this product.Granted, I DO think the rugs are cute, I just question their long term durability in our high traffic environment. For the money, I’ll likely find something more in keeping with my expectations for a kitchen rug…durability, comfort for long periods of standing, easy cleanup without compromise of the design, and a better fit for my specific decor.Ever non conventional, I may repurpose the longer of the three rugs as a banquet table runner. It’s relatively low thickness, a non slip reverse, and it’s dimensions seem to make it an ideal candidate for that application. Its faux cashmere should provide great insulating properties to help keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. I’ll let you know how that off-the-wall idea works out.This set of rugs is cute, they are affordably priced, but they are not for me as kitchen rugs. Perhaps they can take on another role in the kitchen…I’ll keep you posted.
