This is a very well built sharpening steel. It isn't just the traditional steel where it's just steel on its own. This steel has a diamond abrasive on it which really helps. The handle is very nice and feels great in the hand. The shape of the rod is also shaped in a way that really helps with my knives that have a talon shape that can't be sharpened on a traditional sharpening stone. It is a bit of money but it really is a quality sharpening instrument.

I have been a knife snob since I was 12 years old and my Dad warned me a knife I grabbed from his workbench was dull. Being a normal 12 yo, I said "I've got this Dad". Five minutes later as he bandaged my badly cut finger he explained the importance of sharp tools. I haven't forgotten.I have a number of REALLY high quality knives and a professional steel I've used for years. It cost more than TWICE what this costs and I was shocked at how good this was in comparison! As you can see they last for years.I got the 10 inch version for my Niece who fights with keeping her knives sharp but has a short knife block.This has very fine grooves and is indeed lightly magnetized which catches any metal particles from the honing. The entire build level is the highest quality.BTW - if you're not familiar with sharpening steels, go watch some vids (you know where).It's NOT a sharpener (although they're always marketed that way, as most people don't know) it actually straightens the slight bending of the edge from use. Using a steel BETWEEN sharpenings dramatically extends the life of the blade as sharpening involves grinding away material and steeling is "touching up" the edge.That's why any pro kitchens uses steels, and you should too! This is a Pro one at a bargain price, highly recommended!Hope this helps! :)
