Great for home and camping

I've been using a Keurig at home for years and like it but wanted a coffee maker for camping. Several key features made this unit my pick. 1. I can simply pour a standard 16.9 oz water bottle in which eliminates measuring. 2. It will brew 16 oz in one cycle. 3. It will handle a 7" tall insulated cup or shorter ones with included adapters 4. Can use a K cup or the included reusable filter. 5. Narrow unit width.The reusable filter holds four times the amount of coffee as the reusable filter I use on my Keurig. I used the same amount of coffee in the Tastyle and to me it tasted the same. Might be handy if you want to brew something stronger or use tea bags. The ability to select between 6,8,10,12 or 16 oz gives you the option to use a smaller cup without guessing how much water to put in.I used to boiled water and use instant coffee so it's a great addition. Ran fine using my 2000 watt inverter and deep cycle battery.

Design advantages over the Keurig. Better value, too.

So first, it makes a decent cup of coffee in the regular "hot brew" mode. If you use K-cups exclusively (pre-made or re-usable), you get the same moderately under-extracted flavor we've come to expect from automated drip machines. Increasing the cup size simply weakens the brew. It doesn't maximize the potential of the beans like a manual press or pour-over can, but it's fine for quickly cranking out a cup of store bought coffee on your way out the door in the morning. It would not be my first choice for brewing a single-origin where you want all the nuance of the experience.Now, the other brew modes...In "Bold" mode the brew cycle takes longer. The first half of the volume is dispensed with pauses to allow more extraction time. This does address the under extraction issue a bit. The extra boldness was subtle but noticeable. For me, this would be the default mode--"Bold" every time. The "Over Ice" mode is a puzzler. The other two modes dispense water from the basket at 194°F for the full cycle (heater block is probably set for around 200°F give or take a couple degrees). "Over Ice" lowers the brew temperature for the second half the cycle--down to about 140°F. This mode resulted in a very under-extracted, weak brew. To make iced coffee the initial brew needs to be strong for the flavor to survive the dilution from the melting ice. Reducing the extraction temperature doesn't make any sense to me. For this I was ready to knock it down to 3 stars.BUT, it gets its 4th star back because it does address some of the general disadvantages inherent to a Keurig-style machine--namely 1) weak extraction, 2) always having water in the lines which increases the chance of growing mold and 3) being stuck using K-cups. We've already discussed number 1 with "Bold" mode. For number 2, the tank is much smaller--basically a single cup. It's also positioned higher on the machine allowing for gravity feed into the heater block, so no priming is necessary. You can let the water completely run out without having to re-prime the machine. And finally for number 3, you get an actual mesh brew basket that's 3x the size of a K-cup. This not only adds versatility but it also goes a long way toward being able to maximize the brew strength. To me, that's the real saving grace of the Tastyle machine. So ditch those K-cups and use the basket.All things considered, the Tastsyle is nice machine. It has he simplicity and convenience of a Keurig-style machine with the added ability to tailor the cup to your specific taste. It has a slightly smaller countertop footprint than the competition, more versatility and a better price point.
