I kind of love these (but miss Pluto)!
Ok, geek alert: I'm very into astronomy and astrophotography, and when I saw these I just had to get them. Did I need coaster? No, I already have a bunch. Did I want these to up the nerd factor in my house? Absolutely! Am I sad Pluto wasn't in the set? Yeah, a little.Quality and design: These are basically square acrylic sheets with the images of the planets (and the sun, and the moon). The image quality isn't fantastic, but it's a coaster, not a wallhanging. The colors are quite vibrant. For the task at hand they are perfectly adequate. The acrylic is fairly thin, but certainly adequate for a coaster. There are clear rubber pads (5 for each coaster - one in each corner and one in the middle) that help raise it up from the surface it is on and make them easy to pick up. The center pad also keeps it from sagging and makes it feel quite sturdy.Effectiveness: Acrylic isn't the best material for coasters if you're using them on a surface you're trying to protect from condensation. It doesn't exactly absorb water. If it's hot and humid and your drink is cold, it is entirely conceivable condensation would drip over the edge of these. But the fun-and-quirky factor is great!Things to know: Be aware these arrive some-assembly-required. First, you'll need to pull off the protective plastic coating (and once you do, they look much better). Then, you have to apply all the little rubber pads (they're just dome-shaped self-adhesive dots). I recommend doing what I did - pull the protective cover off the bottom side, stick the dots on, and then pull the cover off the top side. Putting al lthe dots on is a bit tedious, but thankfully my 20-something daughter gets a strange joy out of such tasks, so I let her go ahead and do it for me.I've used them quite a while now and they are holding up well. The acrylic hasn't become scratched, and is easy to clean. I'm very happy with them.

Arrived With Numerous Scratches
I ordered these because I am a planetary scientist and thought it’d be a fun, thematic coaster set for department parties, but now I’m not sure if I’d want to show them off at all. I’m a little embarrassed by them. These coasters came in a larger-than-necessary plastic bag without anything holding them in place or protecting them. When they arrived, they had numerous scratches and streaks all over the front and back of each coaster. Many of those scratches are probably due to the coasters rubbing past each other during shipping. Others are more pock-marked and look to be due to something else. This is a big deal to me!Minor assembly is required: they come with a sheet of footer stickers which you can put on yourself. (Not a problem!)Looking closely at the side, it appears the coasters have at least two layers. On the front surface, they have the same little bubbles I get when I put a screen protector on a screen with a bit of dust here or there. The acrylic itself feels like it was just cut from a sheet of thick, clear warehouse plastic — nothing elegant or noteworthy about it. There was even a sliver of acrylic curling on one side that hadn’t fully detached from the cutting process. The planet artwork is nice. The font used for the name of each planet is too curly, I think. It’s a bit hard to read.I think these will last a while, but I expect they’ll continue to collect scratches over the years.Overall, I’m really disappointed by the quality of these coasters. Even if they had been delivered in perfect condition, they just feel a bit light and flimsy compared to what I had expected. That’s fine—it is just acrylic, after all—but it’s worth mentioning just the same.If these were glass, I’d put the market price at $15, but otherwise I’d put the price at $7 or so. Considering the scratches, I’d pay even less.

A Bit Much to Unpackage
These coasters are nice - but they're a bit ridiculous to unpackage. There IS a film on each side - I know the other review mentions there isn't, and that their items were scratched, but I can tell from the pictures that there is still film attached to theirs. That being said, it took forever to remove the film from BOTH SIDES. It's satisfying to do, but it honestly took me a ridiculous amount of time. So just be patient - they will eventually come off. They also come with little rubber nubbins you attach to the back to give it feet - but if you are any kind of OCD, this is going to drive you crazy. Since the coasters are clear, when they are stacked, you're going to see each rubber piece that's not lined up EXACTLY on every coaster. I actually gave up doing this. These coasters also have the most annoying thing that can happen to coasters - they will stick to your glass if there's condensation. So just be aware of that!

Cute coasters
I got these planet coasters for my son who absolutely loves the solar system. These coasters are well made and feel like they are made out of an acrylic type of material. They do not scratch easily and keep your tables protected.
