Fair price, works well.
Excellent quality
Over the last year, I finally mustered the courage to try baking bread and found myself being reasonably successful at it. I tried my hand at sourdough and did pretty good there, too. Where I ride the struggle bus is consistent straight slicing. I do OK at best. I saw this come available through Amazon’s Vine program and decided to give it a shot.I’ll start off by saying that there was some serious thought put into this thing. It offers a solid foundation with several options for thickness… sort of (The tines… wickets?... you tend to have to work around their spacing, but it still offers several options on thickness (and incidentally, if you don’t have a long blade bread knife, it’s time to consider one, especially on something like a large sourdough round). It stays put and holds the loaf well while in use and basically works well. The not so great stuff…. Even folded up, it takes up a lot of space… or at least a lot more than I had anticipated. While it is easy to use and easy to clean, I do question whether its unwieldiness in getting out, putting away, and storing is worth it. Then there is the price… for what it is and how it feels and is built, I think it’s worth it… BUT… for 90% of the bread I bake, it is for use at home where if a slice isn’t super straight or even, it’s no big deal and that makes me think a cheaper and less unwieldy slicer might be a better option…. But then those huge sourdough loaves get made that I might take to work or give tot friends where I want them to look as good as they taste and all of a sudden, this slicer reminds me of it’s worth. The final thing are the liners… I’d prefer some manner of surface that is more durable that won’t damage a knife. I was hoping to not have an ongoing expense.Overall this an excellent slicer that has some shortcomings and might not be the right choice for everyone. I am on the cusp of it not being the right choice for me.
A lot of thought went into designing this bread slicer. A lot and then more thought. Extremely stable when assembled and did not slide at all on the counter. The 20 very stable guides have 3 groups of spacing so you can choose how thick you want to slice the bread. The closer spaced guides have alternating color coded tips so (unless colorblind) you can choose the same pair to cut between. They even included a spare set of plastic color tips should the originals get lost. I tried and could not easily pull them off. If cutting a wide loaf these guide indicators are important. Speaking of width of the loaf, this unit is very flexible. It will accommodate a 10” free style” loaf to anything smaller. I bake bread in a Pulman Loaf Pan to make a 4x4” square loaf, 13” long. I think the widest section, shown in the picture, was designed for this. A perfect fit. The plastic insert that keeps the loaf in place was a fantastic idea. This allows for cutting the last slice to be done safely It came with textured sheets that go under the loaf. The loaf can be cut all the way through, protecting the surface of the unit from the knife. These sheets are tough. My knife did not leave a mark, so they will last a long time. The company included the ASIN to order more from Amazon which may be years down the road. The full color instruction sheet was very complete; unlike most products I get nowadays. For storage the guides, although very stable when in place, easily pull up and the base folds like a book. Included is a cloth sack for storage to keep all the pieces together. Well thought out.My only complaint has to do with the hinges. When folded up the hinge side hits first, leaving the base not fully closed. See Picture This puts a lot of strain on the plastic hinges and the mounting for the hinges if the 2 halves are squeezed together like if under pressure. They only need to be 1 -2 mm larger. Probably a manufacturing issue. This in no way affects the operation while using the unit. This was not worth deducting a point, given all the wealth of positives on the product.
It's difficult to use, and the wire bands are not very sturdy. It is functional and does do what it says it does, and it is big enough to fit a standard loaf of bread (including from a 2lb bread maker), but it's ungainly and hard to store. Not heavy, just awkward.
This stainless steel bread slicer is a well thought out guide that makes it much easier to get even slices from homemade loaves, and the adjustable width and two slice thickness options are especially helpful for everything from standard sandwich bread to wider sourdough. The metal guides feel sturdy in use, and the included liners and crumb tray do a nice job of catching crumbs and protecting the surface so cleanup is simple and your counter stays cleaner. This thing is very sturdy and well built with quality materials. It folds down and comes with storage bags, which helps keep all the parts together, but the folded shape is a bit bulky and not as compact as it looks in the listing, so you will want to plan a spot for it. Overall, it is a useful tool if you bake or buy unsliced bread regularly and want more consistent results, as long as you are okay with storing a slightly awkward, but very functional, piece of gear.
