Handles the rough stuff with ease
A few months ago I bought this entire set. I was so pleased with it, I then bought the baking set and the silicone baking mats, all from this company. I was very pleased to see they are now offering most of the pieces individually. I do a lot of cooking and when I get going on a complicated menu, I need more than one spoon.I just received this spoon in exchange for an unbiased review. When I do a review, it is to share my opinion with other buyers and in some cases, hopefully to enlighten a manufacturer or seller. I call it like I see it!The StarPack silicone products are the best I have tried. They are well made, substantial and do some very demanding jobs.On to this particular product:Like all the other utensils, this spoon is very well made. It is one piece - no nooks or crannies to grow bacteria, no separate head so not likely this spoon will break. The slots are wide enough for liquids to drain through but small enough to catch most food items. Because of the amount of silicone on the handle, it is very comfortable in the hand (and I have have hand and wrist arthritis). It stands up to rough treatment and high heat but due to the "sqwoosh" factor, is easy on my pans. I have used this spoon in my Calphalon pans, my good copper pans, regular old stainless, cast iron and enamel clad cast iron. It can take the heat from the cast iron but leaves NO scratches.I also use this spoon to mix corn bread and other batters requiring hand mixing. Food does not stick to it and it can stand up to heavy batters without bending - another plus.I was making a batch of french onion soup yesterday and had the onions browning in a 400 degree oven in an enameled cast iron dutch oven. I had slid the rack out a little and slid the very heavy lid to the side in order to stir the onions. Twisted my hand wrong and lost my grip on the lid, which promptly smashed down on the spoon, trapping it in a very hot pan. A good minute went by before I was able to grab an extra hot pad and get the lid off the spoon. The spoon just looked at me and said "that didn't hurt". Not a mark on it - and no damage to the lid or the pot, either. And the cherry red color - very cheerful in the kitchen - they stand out from everything else.I have replaced ALL of my silicone with the StarPack products - I love them!March 27, 2015 - edited to add:I am more impressed than ever with the StarPack products. Tonight I was cooking perogies for a church dinner. I took my StarPack spatula, 2 spoonulas and 2 slotted spoons. I didn't want to use metal utensils as perogies can easily tear. These products got dropped, bashed, and generally abused. Someone left one of them in the steam table for several hours, someone else ran one through an extraordinarily hot commercial dishwasher. I was cooking perogies for a straight 3 hours and the spatula never left a hot fry pan.I brought them home, cleaned them up in my dishwasher - and they look no worse for the wear and tear they got tonight. Not one perogie got torn - they did the job MUCH better than metal utensils. I am solidly sold on StarPack silicone products!!
