A beautiful piece of kitchen art made to use for baking and absolutely a joy!
This ceramic bread oven was packaged very well and arrived in great shape. The quality of this piece rivals the more costly brands. I love the handles on the bottom plate, as well as the knob on top for removing the dome.
I bake my own bread. So, I've been thinking about one of these, for quite some time.Normally, I use a normal cast-iron Dutch oven, either round or oval, to bake my bread in. That is because my oven is old, and does not hold the same temperature throughout. (Few, even brand new, do that. You need some seriously high-end professional grade ovens to do so. Home-grade ovens can do baking cakes, sandwich loaf, or smaller items just fine. But not the larger artisan bread loafs.)Now about this one.1) It came, well packed with Styrofoam, but in a brown cardboard box, with almost the sole printing on it being; "Made in China." And inside; was a card, thanking me for my purchase. (So about as much info, as in this advert page.)2) As far as construction, it's ceramic coated "metal." And, as far as China made ceramic coatings are concerned, it's one of the better that I've seen.3) What that metal is though, I could guess two options; A) A light-weight cast-iron, B) A heavy-weight steel. That is to say; it's lighter than my cast-iron Dutch ovens. But heavier than any of my stainless steel pans. Thankfully, one thing is for certain, it isn't Aluminum. (Note: Has a very definite ring to it.)4) What I find very odd though, is the top of the base, has ridges, like a grill frying pan. Even though I haven't baked yet with it; those ridges will push up into the bottom crust of a loaf, leaving dent lines, but also baking the bottom layer hotter and quicker. But then, it might have a use, to hold a small amount of water/vapor, thus slowing the bake process... we'll have to find out.
I love this piece is substantial. My favorite part is I don’t have to worry about burning my hand when trying to lift out parchment paper outof a dutch oven.It looks classy. Would easily handle any sourdough or bread recipe! This is a heavyweight item and is well built! Highly recommend !
Disappointed to say the least. Cracked on first loaf of bread. Tried to get in touch with the company and get something worked out, never responded. For the price, you’d think they would stand by their product.
This seems like a decent tool for bread baking. The whole thing is ceramic, so it’s all oven safe, and being glazed ceramic, it also has some measure of non-porous, nonstick properties (you will need to scrub, but it should come off eventually; the un-glazed bottom and inner surface of the lid could take on oils and color, and could soak in any liquids, so some caution is advised in case you’re doing something fancy that may splatter with the lid on). If I were to design it, I’d glaze all the food contact surfaces…I didn’t see any instruction manuals, and given the plain box, if you weren’t looking for it, you may miss the bottom tray/pan completely (it was totally hidden under the tight-to-the-box-fitting foam), so make sure you alert any potential recipient that they should find 2 pieces (I.e. not just a domed lid. If they opened upside down, they may be curious why a flat pan has so much more foam underneath, where the domed lid resides).I assume you can use it similar to any other ceramic and even cast iron bread baker: pre-heating in the oven for a bit and then putting in dough to a hot and moisture-maintaining environment to develop crust. It is a little lighter than you expect for ceramic (and much lighter for similar capacity cast iron), but that may mean walls are thinner, so take care. The lid handle is integrated. The styrofoam from the packaging flakes off on the product, and it’s not bagged, so make sure to wash and dry prior to using.
Beautiful, but developed a crack after my second time using it.
