A good enough cutter at a great price

We've eaten roasted chestnuts for two years now at our xmas gathering. Last year, we didn't have a cutter so we scored the chestnuts with a knife. That was not fun. This scorer did the same thing, only much faster and safer! The steel used is thin but doesn't flex too badly during use. The plates that score the chestnut seem a little small -- many of the chestnuts were larger than the plates, which meant they didn't fully score the top of the nut and they required a little more work to peel after roasting. The kit also comes with what I assume are a couple finger guards, two picks, and a built-in nut cracker tool that did a just-ok job of cracking almond shells. Are there better cutter tools out there? Yes. This was one of three that our family brought together to handle the task this holiday season. Mine was probably the 2nd best of the three, but it was also the cheapest by far. The other two were $20+, and this one is only around $15. This is a pretty good budget cutter, and would make a great gift for someone who wants to try their hand at this traditon!

Great design and comfortable, but durability is a concern

I really wanted to love this 2-in-1 tool because the design is so practical. It works on a wide variety of nuts and the ergonomic handle makes it very comfortable to use without straining your hands. The automatic rebound feature is a nice touch for processing a lot of nuts quickly, and the included finger guards are a thoughtful addition for safety. However, the build quality isn't the best. Despite being advertised as heavy-duty stainless steel, one of the cutting teeth broke off within just a month of regular use. It’s a shame because the mechanism is efficient and the "cross" blade for chestnuts is very helpful, but it just doesn't seem durable enough for long-term use. If you buy it, be extra gentle with harder shells!

Very strong, durable, and capable of handling the job

I found this incredibly easy to use and while it is a little bit intimidating and does seem like it could hurt a little bit if I messed up I don't know how I would do that it's overall pretty safety use offers excellent crackability I haven't had any of the walnuts I've been using cause me a struggle and I've been able to get everything out easily. I feel like not only is this a functional tool and provides an excellent set with the parrot accessories but it also provides an easy way to crack various nuts and additionally is very sturdy and well built I have no concerns about its durability over time and it has been effective at performing the job that it's set out to do which is made it very useful especially during the holidays.

Just okay...

I love good chestnuts, and certainly they can be difficult to get out of the shell cleanly.Of the last batch I roasted up I'd say about 70% came out easily and a few were almost impossible to completely get the nut out. A lot of that is the nature of the nuts themselves: what kind, how old, etc. A lot more is process. How were they prepped? Cut? Soaked? And how roasted? I'm a novice, though I've eaten chestnuts at least seasonally since a young age. A few times a year I do some reading to come up with a roasting strategy, and usually it works well enough to have some tasty chestnuts. So do these tools help? ... Sort of. From my attempts, using the "cutter tool" to score the raw chestnut doesn't work well. The blade is serrated, but not especially sharp. The shell of a chestnut is tough. It's decently hard to cut with a sharp knife when the blade can be sawn across the shell. I'm not surprised that static pressure struggles to cut the shell. Maybe it would work better with some nuts? Or ones that htas been soaked longer? For cracking open nuts after roasting the tool works better, though if you've done everything right fingers tend to work just as well. The other accessories are handy to an extent. The long picks would be better to have a single spade point on one end. The two prongs tend to shred nut rather than pry it loose. The short cone shaped picks I rather like. They essentially give you a steel fingernail, and who wouldn't want that?

Poor Design Quality

The chestnut cutter doesn’t do a good job of puncturing all the chestnuts. The cross hatch cutter was successful about 60% of the time. You’d need perfectly shaped chestnuts to increase its success rate. Will be returning it.
